Hello Ladies,
I had my surg. 10/31/06, and I find myself itching away. Are you guys having the same problem?

I just had mine on 1/25/07 and I've noticed that I keep itching. I figured it was just dry skin or something... now you've got me wondering...?

Is it like dry skin itch? Or is it like an itch that then sort of tingles when you scratch/rub?

Both are possible. I had the latter starting in early December (I'm 2 months ahead of you in recovery). It seems to be nerves just regenerating. I have noticed after this started occuring (it is far less now than it was) I had more sensation back across my belly. So when I tingle itch, I get excited, I know I'm getting back more sensation.

Ofcourse if its associated with fever, swelling or queasiness you should place a call into your dr.

Where are you in regards to menopause, or could you be having thyroid issues? Here is a post I did on another thread that discussed itching.

There is actual a name for this. It's formication and no I did not mean fornication. Formication is an itchy sensation that feels like insects are crawling under the skin; there is no rash or redness that goes with this sensation. I have had this before, once when I stopped taking my thyroid medication for a month 3 years ago. I was traveling non-stop and didn't slow down to take care of myself. I won't make that mistake again.

Formication is the pits, if you aren't careful you can itch your arms so much you cause a skin irration. Formication can be a symptom of thyroid issues like it was with me but it can also be a big red flag for peri-menopause/menopause. It's a lesser known symptom of menopause. Here is a link on it.

I had formication again last summer, this time due to peri-menopause symptoms. While the person listed in the above link got no relief from Benadryl, I did. Maybe it was in my mind, but when I took a Benadryl the itching seemed to stop. The only problem with that is Benadryl makes me drowsy. According to the WebMD article the best treatment is to get your hormones checked/adjusted.

Ditto on the itching but I get a double dose. Dry itchy skin is something I deal with due to my thyroid but since my surgery it is doubly worse. I take Zyrtec every other day for allergies and have been taking it every day since my surgery to get rid of the "itchies". I'm going to ask about this at my six week check.

I had a good case of the formication during my breast cancer treatments as they threw me into instant menopause. I kept thinking I was allergic to something because I kept itching all over my arms like crazy. My dh would rub the liquid benedryl on them for me to no avail. Finally, my gyn/onc explained what it was and I just had to take oral benedryl for simple relief and rub lotion in my arms constantly. Other parts of my body itched too, but my arms were the worst. It went away as soon as my menopause was complete which was quick for me. If you are a natural menopause which will take longer seek some medical help because the itching will drive you nuts.

I have both. The dry, and the crawly tingly itch. I'm trying very hard not to lose it. All of this is so new, and every time I turn around I'm devlop. something new. I guess for now use Aveeno, and place a phone call to my interal med. Dr.

itching

I had a total hyst in 08/06 and I am taking bio-identical hormone replacement (4mg BiEst, 150mg progesterone cream). I was doing fine, except legs were very tight and I was experiencing water retention. So over the last several months I have decreased my estrogen from 10 mg to the now 4 mg. Now I am itching like crazy, it just feel like something is crawling under my skin. I tried Benedryl and that doesn't do a thing. I had no idea that it could be hormone related. I am going to give my dr. a call Monday and have my levels retested. Thanks for the info. I hope everyone has an itch free evening...
