Upcoming hysterectomy 4/14: how long will I have a catheter?

I'm having a DVH 1 week from today! Im so ready but have a few questions:

How long will I have a catheter?

Since I'm having DVH will I need a binder? What's the benefit of a binder after DVH? My Dr said it wasn't necessary since I'm having a DVH? But, I would like my sisters opinion.

Re: catheter

I had a DVH last year. I had a catheter, which was inserted while I was under anesthesia. They took it out the next day before they got me up to walk. I didn't use a binder - never felt the need for one. I had five very small incisions, which healed quickly and caused very little discomfort. I had a relatively easy recovery from surgery, too.

Here's to a successful surgery and a quick recovery! God bless!

It depends how long you will have the catheter. Due to the bladder sling I had a catheter for one week post operation. I was in the hospital for three days and went home with the catheter. The nurses make sure you are doing good before you go home with it and you will have practice at the hospital before you go home with it. Do you know how long you are having it?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/14: how long will I have a catheter?

My MIL had DVH last year and she was home that same day. They put a catheter in and removed it right away after the surgery. I would ask if they can remove it immediately as the risk of UTI goes up the longer it is in. I have IC and cannot even imagine having a catheter in my bladder for any length of time.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/14: how long will I have a catheter?

I had my catheter removed the evening after morning surgery. Once it was out then I had to produce urine. The output was measured and I had a mini-ultasound done to see what was leftover in my bladder. Though it was good to move around the up and down meant no rest. I did not use a binder but had some cheap "granny" panties on hand.

Mine also came out the evening of my surgery, the nurse told me that I had to urinate within 6 hours or it would go back in. No problem there, I had to go in 6 minutes! I didn't use a binder at all
