un necessary hyst??? (6/27)

I am scheduled for a hysterectomy and a&p repair for friday. I don't even know if I definitely need hysterectomy..I think it's just standard with the anterior posterior repair...which I definitely need. I know I have a cystocele and rectocele but I don't think my utereus is prolapsing. My gut feeling is very uncomfortable. I really don't want to have a hyst yet. But if the repair won't work without it then I guess I will....just too many uncertanties or maybe I'm just being a weenie.

Re: un necessary hyst???

You are definitly not being a weenie. Us woman are kinda strangly attached to our uterus, i mean that with humor. If you need these repairs you probably need the hysterectomy too, but if you are questioning it, ask your Dr to explain it to you. It is my understanding that the repairs could be done without the hysterectomy, but it has a higher failure rate, just from my own research.

I am only 32 and will be having my hyster in Oct, with a bladder sling for the cystocele, and they aren't positive of posterior repairs until after my uterus has been removed. I suffer from evil periods and always have, but now my uterus is large and boggy, they are thinking adenomyosis. My Gyn also diagnosed me with pelvic prolapse, so out it comes with the hopes of keeping my ovaries or at least 1 of them.

Please call your Dr and ask questions if you have any doubts, it's your body and you have a right to have your questions answered.

This is a fabulous website that offers great support. I would also suggest that you dig through the pelvic floor forums, you may find answers that you are looking for.

Re: un necessary hyst???

If you have a cyctocele and a rectocele, you probably don't have ROOM inside for a prolapsed uterus. Once those are surgically repaired, the weight of your uterus may, by itself, cause problems and wreck the surgical repairs.

That being said, if you are having second thoughts, cancel your surgery and get a second opinion. You can cancel your surgery up to the moment of going under anesthesia, but I wouldn't recommend waiting that long ;-)

Re: un necessary hyst???

I agree. If you aren't 100% sure you are doing the right thing, cancel your surgery. Surgery creates permanent results, and if you think you may have any regrets don't do it at this time. Get a second or a third opinion. Your surgery is NOT an emergency. You have the luxury of time on your side. Use it to research your options and to get another opinion.

Re: un necessary hyst???

I just feel like it's going so fast...My dr is so confident and eager to remove like it's just not a big deal...and it probably isn't...but what's best????Total hyst with removal of cervix? Keep Cervix? Is sex the same? Do orgasms change? I've already decided not to remove my ovaries against her advice. I work with this Dr and I trust her but just seems so non-chalant...like...duh....this is how everybody does it.

If I were in your shoes, with as many questions as you have, I would cancel the surgery and get a second, or even a third opinion. You can't know too much about this surgery.

You should not only get opinions about whether or not to have they hyst, but the also about the risks of keeping your uterus/cervix/ovaries, and the risks of delaying longer.

When I had my hyst, I had a deep, dark, irrational fear or ovarian cancer. While mine were perfectly good, I feel so much more relieved that I don't have to worry about ovarian cancer. Nor do I need to be concerned about cervical cancer, since I don't have my cervix. Yes, sex changed a bit, but it's still good. Not worse, not bad, just different, and no longer interrupted by my painful periods.

Get that second opinion!
