Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
I don't think this is the right website since I am not having a hysterectomy but I haven't seen any other websites and I am looking for answers! I had my first ovary removed when I was 21. I am now 36 and having my second out because of a dermoid ovarian cyst. The doctor said she will try and save some of the ovary but it may not be possible. I have another 2 weeks before surgery and this is all I can think of. I googled it which made my anxiety worse. I am so scared that I will never feel normal again. I know surgical menopause is 10 times worse than regular menopause. My doctor also said she can't give me any hormones for 3 weeks because of the risk of blood clots. I have 3 small children and I am so afraid that I am going to turn into a crazy mom. Please help if you have ever been through this! THANK YOU!!!

Re: Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
I had my hyster on July 21, took everything, including both ovaries. Surgical menopause is what you make it, really. I am 39. I will focus on my bone density and other things, but I'm going the no HRT route and still doing okay. Try not to panic.
I don't think I'm crazy. ?? LOL. With the dermoid cyst, you may have already been having some hormonal disorder and have experienced some changes.

Re: Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
Thank you so much!! I am so glad you said that about the hormonal changes that I may be having. I think my husband thinks I am crazy. I feel so irritable sometimes and so nice other times. UGH!! The nurse said this probably isn't related to the cysts rather just related to stesses of daily life. Thanks for making me feel better!!

Re: Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
I had a complex cyst for the last two months and I was NUTS. Absolutely looney toons! (Just ask my spouse! LOL). I was way way better after the surgery and since then. Finally have some regularity in my hormone distribution--as in, I have none, and all is okay!

Re: Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
I understand the scariness of not knowing whether you'll lose the ovary or not. I was told there was a possibility I'd lose mine and we didn't know about my endometriosis before surgery. I lost one ovary when I was 12 to a large hemorrhagic cyst (ruptured before they got me into surgery) and lost the other during my hysterectomy because of the endometriosis. I've been taking Prempro since three days post-op and aside from some hot flashes I've been doing just fine. The good news is that even if you do lose it and can't start HRT for a few weeks your body has a store of hormones that might keep you feeling better than before the oophorectomy in that lapse time. I didn't start having hot flashes until after four weeks post-op and it seems to have been a lot the same for the other ladies who had surgery at the same time. As mentioned, you might have some extra hormones right now anyway, and due to only having one ovary your body also might have all ready been adjusted to a lower level of hormones.
I believe there is a forum way down on the bottom for "oophorectomy only". I'm sure those ladies would help you out, too. I wish you lots of luck on your surgery! I do hope your doc can conserve at least part of your ovary. Menopause really is what you make it, how you deal with it and it's not the same for everyone. I'm sure you'll be just fine no matter what happens.

Re: Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
Hi,
I'm 32, and had my first ovary removed due to painful dermoids when I was 18. I am 3 days post op having my second ovary removed, again because of a complex dermoid. It was an emergency surgery, as I was having torsion, so I was spared the anxiety I'm sure you're feeling. *hugs*
They left my uterus and cervix in place for now, though stated they wanted to remove them eventually. I am taking a birth control pill to replace my hormones for now. I'm only 3 days out and feel normal, so it's hard to say if things will get bad for me. I will say though, that before my surgery I was a horrible emotional mess, and in constant pain for years. Now, I only have my soreness from surgery and have more energy and mental clarity than I can remember. I'm hoping it continues.
My surgical team said that often when there is a dermoid, it affects how the ovary releases hormones. Because those are non functional cysts and they grow and are filled with a cornucopia of delights, they can really change the functionality of the whole organ. Sometimes they can remove them without hurting the ovary, sometimes not.
In my case, I only had a partial left ovary left and so they took the whole thing. Maybe you'll be lucky and be left with a partial. I was just fine with a half of an ovary for over a decade! Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Re: Getting 2nd ovary removed and scared to death...
The good news is, you'll have something that should not be inside your body removed. You should experience an improvement in mood and emotions if anything just from that, and from not being in this anticipation. Stay strong, try to distract yourself and not worry too much. In my case, things are s far way better than I expected. Maybe this will end up being a blessing in disguise for us both!
