Had pre op appt today. Not happy

Went for pre op with gyn. He told me that doing a bikini cut may not be a good idea because I already have incision between my navel and my pubic area. He says I may get a hernia if he does that. SO, he is going to go thru the old incision. He says there may be scar tissue so it may be hard to get to where he needs to be. Or something like that. He says he may leave my cervix but doesn't know if that will happen. he says he may have to take my ovary that I have left or he may keep it there. I guess it depends on the position of the ovary or the cervix. He explained it all but I didn't really understand some of it. All I know is I MAY wake up with a cervix or I may not. I MAY wake up with my ovary or I may not. I am not happy about going thru the old incision. That is a bigger cut than a bikini cut would be. I really like this doctor and totally trust him. He is this short little old man. He is funny too. He told me he is off on Sunday so he would be good and rested for my surgery. That makes me happy. My hospital stay will be until Thursday. he says MAYBE Wednesday but not to hold my breath. I am looking at Thursday though. Longer than I want to stay. He says Demerol or Morphine for pain the 1st 24hrs after surgery. After that, it will be Vicodin. I remember the 1st surgery I had, I was uncomfortable. Don't remember being in pain so much. I had surgery the 1st time at 7pm at night. I was knocked out the whole next day due to the pain meds I was on through IV. The next day I was able to get up and walk around. The doc stressed that walking around after surgery was VERY important. He says I will have hose on my legs to keep clots from forming in them. UGH!!! They are going to fit tight. I HATE tight things around my legs and ankles. I have to do it though. Ok, gonna stop talking now. Hope everyone has a good night.

Hi there (((((Paula)))))

I'm so very sorry that you came out of your pre-op appt. with so many things left up in the air, and going into surgery with several unkown factors...in many cases, the doc just does not know until he has a chance to have a look, unfortunately I know how this must make you feel though, and you are probably more nervous and anxious about the surgery...

I am glad that your doc will be well-rested, and has a good sense of humor--a good bedside manner can make a world of difference in a doc. I know that my doc had a wonderful attitude and bedside manner, and it made my surgery and outlook on everything much more positive.

As for the leg cuffs in the hospital, they may be a bit uncomfortable, but ever-so necessary to help prevent blood clots from forming...I actually found them to be quite soothing and thought it felt very good when they inflated--maybe it was peace of mind for me, having already had bilateral pulmonary emboli in 2002, or really they did feel good on my legs!

Please know that whatever happens, we will all be here to support you--we care so very much not only about your physical health, but also your emotional well-being. If you do have your remaining ovary taken and need HRT (or cannot take HRT for any reason), we have plenty of support here for that too--please keep us posted over the weekend on how you are doing, and please try to pamper yourself some this weekend as well

I am keeping you in my thoughts & prayers, and wish you the absolute best throughout your journey--please take care.

Sincerely, Trish

Thank you Trish. I am feeling VERY anxious about the surgery. The hospital called to ask about my medical history today. That made me even more nervous. I know everything will be ok. My motherand I are going to get pedicures tomorrow. I know I can't have nail polish but I can get my feet cleaned and get all the dead skin off of them. I am sure we will go out to lunch too. My mother's birthdy is on Monday(the day of my surgery) I thought I would treat her to a pedicure and lunch. I will keep you all posted on how I am feeling this weekend. I love this site. I am glad I found all of you.

Something to consider, I did not have my longtime gyno do my LAVH. I knew that because I had considerable endometriosis from a laporoscopy back in 2001 and had been in SEVERE back pain this year, I researched a gyno surgical specialist in laporoscopy in the Raleigh/Cary NC area. because I had a bad feeling I was in for a rough deal. Thank goodness , I wonder if my longtime gyno could have handles the situation that arose.
When the 2 awesome laprocopic surgeons went in, they found my uterus was CEMENTED to my bowel wall (hence the lower back pain), they called in a general surgeon to protect the bowels while they spent 2 hours removing the uterus from the bowels and the endo around it. These was done as a LAVH. THe surgeons said it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen and were pleased with the outcome and I was pleased with not having to do it abdominally. The point of all this, is I wonder what my nice, older gyno would have done with the unexpected serious situation. If you have concerns, I would seek a 2ND OPINION-I am glad I did!

Good luck!

Hey there spalover! Also live in the Triangle, also up in the boonies near the VA border. I haven't any choice other than my nice gyno (literally the only game in town) but he seems very on the ball. I'd been to three different gyn since my problem happened NINE years ago. He, the fourth, found it within a few months of trying things. From what I understand, it's not all the easy to find a prolapse until it's significant. But for me, the fix doesn't seem all that complicated.

I don't disagree with getting a second opinion though. I am really glad you had expert help - wow, that could have been a mess. Well, it WAS a mess. Never mind, I'm on pain meds and have no idea what I'm saying. lol

Paula, we're going to the castle on the same day - me to my wee, backwater manor but with really sweet people I've already met. Good luck to you!

I will be in a hospital with doctors right there to help my gyn if he needs it. I fully respect and trust my gyn. I am just really nervous. Thanks for the advice though

Take it easy, it's normal to be nervous, but now after being through it, I realize I worried about all this stuff that never materialized. I actually had a smile on my face before they took me in, I was secretly thinking when I woke up, I was going to have all that longtime pain behind me and would be looking forward to a new life!!!
Be strong! Be Happy!
