I am scheduled for my TAH on Sept 28. I have an enlarged uterus (4 month pregnant size) and large fibroids. Heavy painful periods every 2-3 weeks. My surgery is on my sons birthday, exactly 23 years to the day since my uterus last saw the light of day (c-section). The dr says I am in a grey area as far as my ovaries go, I am 47. He wants to wait and see how they look before he decides whether to take them out. Everything is going amazingly well, supportive husband, boss says take as long as you need and he will pay me all the way thru. The thing that scares me out of my mind is the pain after the surgery. Just thinking of weeks of pain makes me sick. Also worried about the 16 steps up to my apartment after leaving the hospital.

Hi Stacy,
That is so great - that you're getting support from work and DH.
I had a TAH/BSO/TOT for an enlarged uterus, fibroids, cysts, and stress incontinence. As for pain - everyone is different. I've read that some women on here don't have a lot of pain, but others do. It's hard to predict...but please make sure to talk with your doctor about your concerns about pain. There are so many good pain meds that you shouldn't have to suffer with pain while you are healing.
As for stairs...I live in a tri-level and have been dealing with stairs constantly since I got home from the castle. My recommendation: go slow on the stairs.
I hope you have an uneventful surgery & recovery!

You will see a varied response regarding pain. I think the one thing I would say is manage your pain up front the first several days, don't wait to see how bad (not saying it will) it can get. Its just easier to control pain by keeping a dam barrier ahead of it (pain pills) than it is to try and rebuild that dam once the pain is peaking.
One thing you might consider with stairs is trying going up/down sideways. The way that takes the most pressure off the guts is backwards but that thought kind of scares me. I wouldn't want to go backwards down 16 stairs!

When I've had previous surgeries, I found sideways worked really well.

You will most likely be sent home with prescription pain killers. I was given both percoset and vicodin after my TAH. I agree that the key is to stay on top of your pain-- don't wait until you hurt to take something. For the first few days I took the painkillers as directed even if I wasn't hurting yet. Then as time went by I only took them as needed-- I started noticing not needing them as much at night. After the first couple of nights I didn't have to get up to take a pill-- I could sleep longer and longer until I was making it through the night. I still have alot of pills that I never needed so I'm thinking the pain wasn't as much of an issue as expected.

I would be really surprised if they don't send you home with narcotics-if they don't, tell them you need them.
I remember very clearly right after my son was born, the (nasty) nurse came in and said, "I have two tylenol 3s for you." I said, "Well could you please go out there and call my doctor and remind hm that I just delivered a 12 pound baby and bring me two percocets?" She was back in to minutes with my percocets.
