Insurance Won't Pay for Hysterectomy--Need Advice

Hello, gals:

This is my first day as a HysterSister member.

However, I have just found out that our insurance company (for whom my husband works!) has denied our claim and will not pay for my hysterectomy. I am 40 and have chronic problems with bleeding, adhesions, pelvic pain, and PMDD, and the insurance company has reviewed all of these files.

My doctor and her staff have gone round and round with the nurse and medical director at our insurance company who give the yays or nays, and have gotten nowhere. After weeks of going to bat for me from all of these angles, the dr.'s office called yesterday with the news that insurance won't pay.

My pre-op appointment was today, which I had to cancel. My surgery is still scheduled for Aug. 19.

My knee-jerk reaction is to call our attorney, but of course that's tricky business suing the company your husband works for. But, I also know that this is not a decision coming from people who care about what's good for me and my health and my family, but rather a decision made by someone who is hired to mind the bottom line. Somehow that just doesn't bode well with me and my uterus!

So, before I sit down and cry and abandon my right to a much-needed procedure that has been recommended (and faught for!) by a specialist (my OBGyn), I wanted to see if there is anyone out there who has been through this and can offer advice, strategy, tricks, anything.

Please let me hear from you!

hi and welcome insurance companies can require your dr to show proof that all other non-surgical options have failed. have you tried other options and does your dr have that on record? how about getting a second opinion and seeing if that dr would agree that a hysterectomy is needed and have both dr's contact the insurance co? thats about all i can think of...i wish you the best of luck. insurance companies can be a real pain sometimes
