high bed--is this going to be a problem?
i have a high poster bed that requires some effort to get into before my surgery (5-24-04). to all you sisters out there who have had their hyster already...is this going to cause a strain on my abdomen if i use a step stool to get into bed.? also, what do people who have stairs in their houses do after their hyster?
at this point, i've found all kinds of things to worry about. can anyone offer any advice on this last "worry" that i've come up with. thanks for any help. atack 21 and "counting down"

high bed--is this going to be a problem?
I had my surgery last Tuesday and i still have not been able to sleep in a bed I sleep sitting up on the couch with a stool to put my legs up. I had a TAH but all people heal differently. I would not worry about this or you will make yourself nuts.

I've also wondered/worried about this same issue. We also have a high bed, and even now I sometimes have to take a little bit of a jump at it. I was also thinking about using a step stool. It's funny the things we take for granted, isn't it? We also have stairs, but I don't think that will be a problem for me. Just about everything I'll need will be upstairs. We have a small office refrigerator I think I'll put in my bedroom retreat.

high bed--is this going to be a problem?
My bed is high, also and I climbed in on my hands and knees and then turned around, while holding onto my DH's hand. I let him lower me down. I put my foot on the sideboard of the bed to get out. (I didn't need it to get in). Again, I let my DH do the work - slowly pulling me up, letting me use my arms to turn myself so my legs were over the side, but not dangling (remember, feet on the sideboard or frame), and then quickly holding my hands again to pull me all the way out. We got the hang of it after about 2 times.
I bought a bed wedge before my surgery and it was the most helpful thing I had. I put a pillow on top of it and a pillow under my knees and it was very much like the hospital bed. I was very comfortable in bed. My back never got sore and neither did my hips or legs. Think about getting the bed wedge - it's great.
I have stairs - lots of them. My bedroom is on the main floor, the bathrooms are on the top and bottom floors. I used a commode for 1 1/2 wks and my DH got a medal for taking care of it. When you do stairs, have someone w/you and go very slow. Avoid them for a while, if you can.
Good luck to you. Praying for your speedy and uneventful recovery.

high bed--is this going to be a problem?
there is NO WAY i could have gotten in a high bed after my hyst. I had a great recovery, but... i was sore. Just lifting my leg a little would have been painful. My bed is a "normal" bed and i had a hard time getting in it.once i got in, i did not move at all. just be careful.

A little step stool would be a great idea!
Another idea I've seen for some who have difficulty getting up and down from the bed by themselves is to get a kitchen or dining room chair (something straight backed and non-rocking is the point) and turn it so the back is next to the bed. This gives you a good firm handle next to the bed to be able to help yourself stay steady as you get up and down.
I didn't get a bed wedge, but I have TONS of pillows. I started off with 2-3 behind my back/head and a couple under my knees - much like the hosp bed sensation. Now, at 3 weeks, even if I fall asleep in that position, I generally find that I've peeled any extra pillows out of my way during the night to adjust down to whatever comfort level I need. A lot of nights I'm down to one pillow under my head and one between my knees while I lay on my side. I was a tummy sleeper previously, and haven't quite worked my way back to comfortable with that.
Just remember to move slowly, don't hold your breath - breathe thru your gradual movements so you don't tense up. The more relaxed you can be as you move, the gentler you go, the more willing your body will be to move while you recover. The more you move(without overdoing it all at once), the less gas pain, the less constipation and the sooner you'll feel better.

high bed--is this going to be a problem?
A high bed is still out of the question for me three-plus weeks out, as is my own bed. I have a rented hospital bed, made cozier with the addition of a layer of memory foam, and am doing pretty well getting in and out of that. I have a very large incision, though, so that might make a difference, plus the fact that I am a very large woman.

I have a high bed also; the first couple of days I had to have my husband help me in and out of bed. Then I used my son's "Little Tikes" stool & it really helped. I would suggest a stool like that. It is quite sturdy & just enough height. Sleeping with a pillow between your knees also helps to reduce abdomen pain.

high bed--is this going to be a problem?
I have a high bed to. MY DH Suprised me when he brought me home. Not only did he buy me a window AC, but he took the frame of the bed and put the bed right on the floor! He did this to make it easy for me as he couldn't take time off work. That meant I was being cared for by my 9 yr. There was no way he could help me get up. Just a thought! Good luck!

I have a high bed also and got a little step stool to put beside my bed to help. It did the trick. The pillow between your knees really does ease the strain on your abdomen.
