Surgery Tuesday, Diabetes Infection Risk
Good morning. I went in for my preop yesterday and found out my A1C is up to 11.6 which I know is stupidly high. They won't cancel my hyst because it's for Endo cancer but they are worried about infection. Just wondering if anyone else has been in this position and what their recovery was like, if the drs did anything to help minimize the risk and what I can do myself once I get home. I'm already eating a million times better than I was which will help long term. I just need advice for now with the surgery so close. Thanks.

Re: Surgery Tuesday, Diabetes Infection Risk
I am also diabetic and my a1c was 8 at time of surgery. I had zero complications from DVH and am now 6 weeks. I start back to work on Monday. Wishing you an uneventful surgery and recovery!

Thanks. I'm worried but I'm willing to do whatever needs to be done. Hoping everything is uneventful as well.

Be extra viligent with handwashing and be sure any caretakers, visitors wash well too.
Keep an eye on your incisions.
Perhaps you will need some preventive antibiotics.
Good luck!

Re: Surgery Tuesday, Diabetes Infection Risk
That tells what your levels were, but if you get under tighter control now and post op, it will help a lot. Maybe ask for a consult with a diabetes educator or nurse specialist to go over monitoring and diet with you. I don't know how often you check your levels or adjust your diet, but even if you've been doing it, a refresher consult might really help you. Best wishes for a healthy recovery.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking an appointment with an endocrinologist might be in order. I'm doing chemo after the surgery and I've read the steroids spike sugar levels.
