2 weeks post hysterectomy: Nightmares every night about my children dying

I have been having nightmares every night about losing family members. One night it was my 3 year old bleeding internally and the doctor telling me he had about 6 hours to live. Another night I dreamed that my 6 year old drowned in a muddy lake and we couldn't find her. Another night that my husband (who is not nor has ever been in the military) was deployed to Iraq for 6 months and neither of us expected that he would ever come back.
These dreams are so emotionally painful and I want them to stop. My best guess is that my psyche is trying to cope with the loss of my fertility and its coming out as a fear that if one of my children dies I won't be able to have another one to "replace" them. Any suggestions?

Re: Nightmares every night about my children dying

Elisa,
So sorry you are going through this. Your body has gone through a lot and there could be some truth to what you said. My question to you is "How do you truly feel about your surgery?"
Talking about it gets it out in the open. Reality, if anything happened to one of your children or husband, you couldn't replace them anyway.
I would recognize it for what they are, nightmares and start to focus on what you have gained through the durgery.
((HUGS))
Quick healing!

I also had nightmares every night for the first couple of weeks, some pretty awful ones, but hang on, they will go away before you know it!

Hi Elisa

Are you taking any medications, anything new perhaps? Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your dreams. My husband and I quit smoking in April and we did it using the Nico-derm Patch. We found that wearing the patch overnight gave us vivid nightmares so we took it off every evening. No more bad dreams..... Just thought I would mention our example in case you are taking something that could affect your sleeping habits.

Take care

Percocet made me have horrible nightmares. Not sure if you are still taking pain meds but they could be the reason.

I didn't even take any pain meds ever but had awful dreams for awhile. After effects of anesthesia maybe? I don't know.

Re: 2 weeks post hysterectomy: Nightmares every night about my children dying

It might be the pain meds. I can't remember if the nightmares correspond with the nights I take them - about half the time I don't need to take them.
I probably need to have a long journal session about my feelings about surgery. Lots and lots of mixed feelings for sure. I physically and mentally could not handle another pregnancy (I've had 4 kids, the last 3 all difficult pregnancies) but we always wanted 6 kids and always held out that hope I guess. But I'm also relieved because I was terrified every month that I would get pregnant.
