Soreness where the IV was..
I can sympathize. They infiltrated the IV in the back of my hand in surgery. My hand and forearm swelled up and I looked like Popeye. For the rest of my stay at the castle, they had me keep it elevated with a heating pad on it. I'm now 4 weeks post-op and it is still swollen. Much of it has subsided, but I still can't wear my wedding ring or see my knuckles yet. And I have substantial bruising that just gets more purple and blue over the past three weeks. It doesn't appear to be going away yet.
Hugs,
Patti

Soreness where the IV was..
I'm glad you brought this up. I had my IV on the back of my right hand. I didn't get swollen up, but the spot where it was is still tender. It feels like it has been bruised, althought there is no bruise visible.
Does anyone know how long this will last? It has been over 3 weeks for me.

Soreness where the IV was..
I cannot remember what the hardness in the vein is called, but it is caused by the IV medication (I think the anti-nausea medication) scarring the vein. Mine is gone now, but it was still there when I had my staples removed 1 week post-op.

I am so glad you brought this up!
I'd been wondering for more than three weeks now if they perhaps messed something up with my IV. They put it into the top of my left hand, and to this day its sore and painful. I can't even wear a watch, cause the pain goes just past my wrist. And, something in there feels hard - almost like a hardened vein.
It is getting slightly better each day, but at a VERY slow pace.
BTW, my TAH was July 13th.

Soreness where the IV was..
The top of my left hand was still sore at my 3 week checkup and I asked the doc about it. He said it was the medication used during the surgery. He said they use it because it doesn't make you nauseous after the surgery, but it cooks your vein.
I remember in the OR when they put it in my IV. OUCH!!!!! It felt like fire shooting up my arm. It eventually goes away.

Soreness where the IV was..
Soreness is common but if the redness is new or increasing in size mark the area with a pen around the redness. Watch for more redness extending past your pen marking and fever. if this happens call your Dr, it could be cellulitis ( a skin infection) and will need to be treated with antibiotics.

Soreness where the IV was..
The worst part of any hospital experience I've ever had is getting the IV. And several times they have stuck one hand, only to have it not work and have to stick the other hand. My IV was in my right hand, but my left had was badly bruised from getting stuck there.

Soreness where the IV was..
Sounds like you have phlebitis or inflammation of the vein. Hand veins are not optimal but in school they teach us to start at the hand and work our way up. I prefer to start IV's in the forearm so they don't interfere with movement/function. Also the hand has more nerves or rather closer together ones. As someone else said, watch it closely.
