Catheter question
I just had my preop appt today and my surgery is tomorrow. So I just found out that I will need to go home with a catheter for 1 week due to all of the work I'm having done (TVH, bladder sling, cystocle, vag. vault repair, AR) in that area. Anyway, I'm really uncomfortable with the thought of leaving the hospital and having to "handle" this on my own.
Is it hard (complicated, or messy?) to empty &/or put back together? I have no idea what I am in for.
Any help would be really appreciated!!

Catheter question -- Update!
Hi MichelleE,
I had a TVH and had a cath for about a week. All you have to worry about is emptying it and that is very easy to do with just a couple of clicks, letting it drain, and click the clip back into place. It is kinda a hassle to carry around the bag everywhere you go, but for the first week, you are basically just in bed or on the couch, so you can manage fine. My husband would take me on short walks at night (in the dark), and I just hung the bag on my pocket. Once in a while, it would be irritating to me internally, but, your pain meds should take care of most of that.
The nice thing about it is that you don't have to get up at night to go to the bathroom. And, you will also gain such an appreciation of freedom when you have it taken out. You will not take for granted peeing on your own!
I was so scared to have to go home with it, but it really wasn't that bad...just a little inconvenient and it will be out before you know it!
Wishing you the very best tomorrow!

Catheter question -- Update!
I have only had cath in the hospital but I am sure they will show you how to deal with emptying it and whatever else is needed regarding it.
I pray your surgery and recovery go well and time with the cath passes quickly.

There not hard at all to maintain. it will have a cap thing that you undo over the toliet to drain when the bag gets full. they can be a pain but not to bad.

Catheter question -- Update!
Hi Michelle I had the catheter also for 8 days, during surgery my bladder was a little damaged so they had to leave it until it healed. Let me tell you it has advantages and disadvantages. First you don´t have to worry about getting to the bathroom, it is nos very confortable so it takes your mind away from the pain you can feel from the surgery (Istarted noticing the pain until they took off the catheter). The down side is that you have to take it everywhere with you. My sister joked about telling me "you look so elegant with your COACH bag". But when they take it away is great.
Good luck

This all helps!
Thanks everyone - guess I just won't plan on leaving the house for the next week. No big "parties" planned anyway!
Just knowing what to expect helps - thanks again!

Catheter question -- Update!
Just wondering how often sisters are sent home with catheters? Is this common with everyone, or is it basically if you have a specific type of work done?

Catheter question -- Update!
Hi sweetflteach,
The catheter is used in the hospital with a hysterectomy for a few days.If you have any bladder work done then you will go home with one. I think something to have in mind is that when it is taken out to relax and understand that you're body needs to get used to not having the catheter and having to work again...this usually doesn't take long but I did experience this for a short time. I had TAH with BO.
I wish you all the best.

Catheter question -- Update!
I am having a pubo-vaginal sling made with my own fascia on the day that I'm also having my TAH. The gyn is doing one surgery, the urologist is doing the PVS. The urologist told me that the nurses at the hospital will teach me how to do a intermittent self catheterization before I am discharged. That means no indwelling cath that I'm sent home with, but it also means I will have to be able to thread that thing in while I'm recovering with a huge abdominal incision? The doc seemed to think it was no big deal, that a lot of women do it when they get sent home, but I will tell you that this is of more concern to me than the idea of being in pain after surgery. I had to have a urodynamics study done where they catheterize you and put a contrast solution in your bladder and having that in was very uncomfortable. I am trying not to obsess about it.

I didn't need a catheter afterall -
This was a weird but great conflict of opinions.
The Dr. acted like I would ABSOLUTELY need to have a catheter.
But then the nurses said that IF I could void by myself then they would measure that amount, then cath me and compare that to the amount left in my bladder. If the amount left in my bladder was only a certain % of what I had gone by myself (I forget exactly what percentage) then I wouldn't need to go home w/ a cath. Well, they measured me 3 times and they were happy w/ the results each time - so no cath!!!
I was trying to prepare myself that it would not be the end of the world - there are worse things. And with a TVH, (uterus & cervix removed) bladder sling & AR, I should probably expect a cath. But I guess I got lucky and that's one less thing to worry about now!
Thanks to you all for your (quick) responses while I was worried about all of this!! And Good Luck to You Too!
