Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
hi,
It depends on how you feel and why one of your doctors wants you to wait.
I was younger (41 yrs) when I had my surgery and was always planning to take HRT. The 'when' for me was decided by the fact that I was symptomatic within 12 hours post surgery.
There's no harm in waiting if that's what you want to do. Just a warning though - HRT can take 8 to 12 weeks to work (and that's if you get the dosage right first time) so don't wait until you feel really awful before you do something about it.

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
thank u so much for replying!!! I feel so overwhelmed!!! My concern is also the effects on your body not having any estrogen. so I guess my question is what is your opimion the risk of hrt or the risk of no estrogen. I am four weeks out and am not having any symptoms....wondering when they will show up....what are your thoughts?

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
My biggest concern about having a hysterectomy and BSO was experiencing surgical menopause. My doctor didn't want me to do HRT immediately after surgery because of the increased risk of blood clots, but he also said I probably wouldn't need HRT immediately because of stored estrogen in my body. After a couple of weeks, I noticed I would wake up during the night and a wave of heat would pass over my body- no sweating, thankfully. I also noticed I had a harder time dealing with stress and was more emotional than usual. I felt like it was an indication that my stored estrogen level was being depleted and things were likely to get worse. My doctor called me in a prescription for Premarin (.45 mg), and I felt much better in a few days. Personally, I think it stands to reason that HRT is more important for surgical menopause than regular.

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
We have a lot of interesting articles on the subject. Here is a link to our menopause and HRT articles ---> menopause and hormones. Read about the Safety Breakthrough in HRT and about how Estrogen Matters along with the other articles. You'll be surprised at all that estrogen does for bones, teeth, emotions, mental health, sexual health, etc. I was symptomatic the same day I had my hysterectomy. I wanted HRT immediately, but I had to wait 10 days for pathology. That was a long 10 days of crying, anger, and hot flashes. But that is me. Read and decide for yourself.

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
I'm 33 and started the patch one day after I was discharged. I was experiencing hot flashes almost immediately. Didn't quite realize what they were at first, I kept blaming the plastic beds and pillows in the hospital. I've been home since Sunday afternoon, have had the patch on since Monday evening, and am already 99% hot flash free.

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
I am 48 and had not started menopause. My doctor started me on 1mg estradoil the morning after surgery. His attitude was it was easier to try and keep estrogen in my system than try later to get levels right when the estrogen was depleted.

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
I had endometriosis so I can not start hrt for six months however I did get a shot of testosterone the day after my surgery. This is supposed to help with menopause symptoms and to help with bone density loss because I have family history of osteoporosis. I am post-op two weeks today and have horrible episodes of night sweats and wake up with my sheets and night gown soaked. I did not know until after my hysterectomy that I was not going to be able to do hrt right away so this has really thrown me off and I am confused as to how to deal with surgical menopause symptoms. I feel abandoned by the doctors but at least I understand why i have to wait. Everyone's situation is different so I would find out why the one doctor recommends waiting and do some research to find what's best for you.

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
Every doctor's opinion on this is so different. I also had severe Endo and waited 3 months before starting hrt but my doctor is of the opinion as long as you take a combined hrt it will keep the hrt at bay. I do hope he's right!

Re: one dr says take hrt one says wait
I am 46 and had LAVH with tubes and ovaries removed. I started HRT with a patch 6 days post surgery. Surgery was Wednesday, I went home Thursday, and cried off and on all weekend and Monday. Called the doctor and got the go ahead to start the patch on Tuesday. Everyone is so different. Some ladies take a long time to show symptoms, others get them immediately.
