Scared of bladder problems/urinary incontinence after hysterectomy
Hi ladies...I keep posting more and more as it gets closer! What have any of you experienced as far as bladder issues following hysterectomy? I already have IBS and ahem...TMI....fecal incontinence problems due to that and a bad 4th degree tear after childbirth. I don't want to add more problems. Anyone have any input? Thanks!

Re: Scared of bladder problems/urinary incontinence after hyster
I had a sleepy bladder immediately after waking from surgery. I went fine after that and it took 3 days to get more normal urge sensation. But no incontnance.
If you have any current urinary incontinance, now is the time to address it!
I wouldn't anticipate adding that problem to you list! Just be patient with your body after surgery. They do muck about with all those organs and it may take some days for your body to re sync.

Re: Scared of bladder problems/urinary incontinence after hysterectomy
If anything, I feel like I have more bladder capacity. Maybe all that extra space in my pelvis allows full expansion?! Hope you also come through it with no urinary problems, you've got enough going on. Good luck!

Re: Scared of bladder problems/urinary incontinence after hysterectomy
I am copying some text from my "Introduce Yourself" post because you may find it helpful.
I am eight days post-op from the first surgery I have ever had (besides episiotomy from childbirth.) First IV, first general anaesthesia, first incisions. I was very nervous, and I noticed that the hospital staff slowed down their explanations when I mentioned that it was my first time, and I was nervous.
My surgery took five hours instead of three because of a problem revealed during the cystoscopy. My OB-GYN called a urologist, who recommended removing one stitch, and then the problem was solved. (Something was squirting on one side, and not squirting the same way on the other, and she thought the squirting should be symmetrical.) Thank goodness for attention to detail!
Are you having a cystoscopy as part of your procedure? I don't know if that is standard or not, but it is good to be checked out while you are still under so they can make any repairs then and there.
General anesthesia was great. The worst part of post-op for me was the catheter. I couldn't sit up without feeling pain, and I asked them to remove it, knowing I would need to demonstrate that I could pee fairly soon or they would need to put it back in. I was able to pee on my own, but I had to strain a bit, and it did not flow the way it had before, so I was worried, but I kept drinking water and bothering the nurses to take me to the bathroom. My doctor said that the difficulty was typical, and that it would get better, and it did. I feel like I am urinating normally now.
Good luck to you! When it is all over, you may realize that the pre-op dread is worse than the post-op experience. I hope it is that way for you.

Re: Scared of bladder problems/urinary incontinence after hysterectomy
My bladder decided to go all spastic on me after surgery. As supergrl said they "mucked" around in there (I like that description). I was just thankful I could pee and not have to stay an extra day or go with a catheter. It took about a week and a half for the spasms to be pretty well gone.
Mandpanda, have you been able to talk to your surgeon about the IBS and 4th degree tear after childbirth. I hate to see you suffer with continuing issues.
on your surgery. Remember we are here for you. Please keep us informed on how you are.

Re: Scared of bladder problems/urinary incontinence after hysterectomy
I am over a year post op and I STILL don't have the urge to pee. You know, that sensation that says "you really need to go empty your bladder"? It doesn't bother me. I go first thing in the morning and last thing at night and then every time I pass a toilet. I don't have any incontinence, probably because I make sure I go so often.
My partner cracks me up when we're out and about. He'll whisper to me and ask if I need to pee!!! Thank god for him because when we're out I tend to forget
