For those with constipation issues

I had my surgery on Thursday and hadn't pooped until a few moments ago. I was feeling miserable, until I thought of something. Normally, liquor makes me poop for some reason. So today I stopped my pain pills early this morning since I had a plan. I'm paranoid about what mixing pain pills and liquor would do to my body. I took it easy today and the pain wasn't really that bad thank goodness. Tonight I slowly drank about two shots worth of whiskey. Within about 10 minutes I headed to the bathroom and the poop came effortlessly. I'm happy to find out that my "liquor = poop" thing still works!! I just wanted to share in case this helps anyone else who has been miserable with constipation!

Re: For those with constipation issues

Caffeine does the same for me, so this morning I had regular coffee instead of the decade I have been drinking since the lymphacetic colitis diagnosis 2 years ago. Hoping it works and I go this morning.

Personally, I would not recommend taking any type of alcohol at this time. Some pain medications, narcotics in particular, can linger in the body for several days after they're stopped, and can still cause a dangerous interaction. I do however, second the previous poster's recommendation of coffee, or really, any hot beverage; I find peppermint tea works quite well to get the bowels moving. Also be sure to take regular walks, which willl help more than anything else. Also try supplementing your diet with magnesium, which promotes proper bowel function; food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. Try making a smoothie with almond milk, cherries, spinach, and ground flaxseeds; that's what ultimately got things moving for me. Best wishes for your continued recovery!
