PreOp with PostOp Questions
Yesterday was the first day that I visited this sight. It is wonderful to have support out there.
I went to my doctor last week because of frequent period, pain with intercourse and the feeling that my insides were falling out. After my exam, I was told that I would need a hysterectomy because my uterus is prolapsed. He told me that it wasn't an emergency, so I will not have it done until March. However, I have done some reading on other web sites and have a few post op questions. First of all, I understand that I will be having a vag hyst, but my doctor said that I could go back to work in two weeks, a week if I feel ok? I am wondering, is that possible? Also, I read that the Hysterectomy can change the depth of the vagina. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Thank you in advance for all of your help.

PreOp with PostOp Questions
Personally I don't think you'll be up to returning to work after a week - although its possible you can go back after 2 weeks. I really didn't have pain but sitting was my biggest thing to deal with and that fact that just about everything made me tired.
I had more done that just the hyster but I returned to work (full time) by the end of week 4 (I could have gone back a week earlier but I have a 45min driving commute & doctor suggested I rest 1 more week).
As for vagina shortening - it all seems the same to me DH!

Mine was abdominal so I can't comment on returning to work in 2 weeks. I can tell you that I haven't noticed ANY change what so ever in my vagina since the surgery. If it is shorter heck if I can tell

PreOP with PostOP questions
Thank you.
I am happy to get any input I can. The PreOp part is easy part. I am just worried about what happens afterwards.
I look forward to more information.
Thank you again - Sisters.

PreOp with PostOp Questions
The range of recovery from a vaginal hyst is 2-4 weeks, so what your doctor says is possible. One of my friends went back in two weeks (a high school teacher) so she is on her feet all day. She did fine.
I had a TAH and was initially told 6-8 weeks. Then after surgery since I was doing well my doc told me 4 weeks.( I have a desk job) But he agreed to hold back my release because of my long commute (almost 2 hours one way).
I don't think a hyst changes the depth.

PreOp with PostOp Questions
Hi Laura Jean,
The initial recovery period for a hyst, whether done vaginally or abdominally, is generally accepted to be 6-8 weeks. Note that I say 'generally accepted'; this is what most Drs. seem to tell their patients. Of course there are exceptions...some Drs. do tell their TVH patients that 4 weeks is the expected recovery.
Frankly, I'm very surprised at what your Dr. has said

. I personally do not think that is a realistic expectation , especially since it seems that you will have repair work done also.
I strongly encourage you to seek a second opinion. This will give you the opportunity to determine if a hyst is the only option available for you, and also to see what another Dr. says regarding recovery should a hyst be your best option. This is major surgery and since it is not an emergency or life-threatening, it is in your best interest to be sure that this is right. I'm not trying to discourage you at all, but trying to set a realistic picture for recovery.
I had a radical hyst for cervical cancer, which includes removing the upper third of the vagina. I was worried (as was my DH) about how this would effect our intimacy, but once I was cleared to resume sexual relations, I'm happy to report that everything is fine. My Dr. had told me that the vagina is elastic and will stretch to accomodate and he was right!
Best wishes and s

I was told
Mu date is next Tuesday so I have been checking out the post-op preparation avidly. I also asked specifically about stairs and walking at my pre-op and I was told that stairs and walking aren't things I can't do but I sure as heck won't be wanting to do much of them in the first weeks. Better be able to handle that first walk up the stairs as my home is an apartment on the second floor of a walk-up building though so with support, you should be able to get to your comfy bed if you choose. Once pn my floor though, I am glad there is a reasonably long hall to use to start my walking in as I am going to pace myself in order to heal as quickly and permanently as possible. Have read enough of people pushing too fast and having to go back on to time off. Once I am back to work, I need to be able to put in long hours to catch up after the six weeks of I was told to take because of the abdominal incision and lifting required in my work.
To be honest, I am glad someone asked the vagina question. Since I am having mine for cervical cancer that has spread so far I don't have the option of keeping my cervix and don't know what to expect. I get this picture of this little tube and two little ovaries hanging somewhere in me with a big emptiness in between. I know that is creative graphics but that is the image I wake up to from my dreams.
What I do want to know is simple exercises I can do to start toning my sromach muscles as soon as possible as I will be lifting up to 40 pounds at times (children into cribs etc) once I get back to work and I don't get sick days if it turns out I don't have the strength to do my work.

PreOp with PostOp Questions
I had an LAVH just over 2 weeks ago and I am doing fine. I went for my 2 week post op visit and Dr. said to still be careful lifting things. I don't work outside the house but I can tell you I am feeling about 80% back to normal at this point. Your body will let you know if you are ready. But I have been doing laundry with my son's help and dishes since about the 1 week mark. There is absolutely no way I would have gone back at 1 week. 2 I may have depending on the job. But remember I had 3 belly incisions also. My body lets me know when I've gone too far. But Dr. also said full recovery is 6 weeks regardless because there are alot of stitches inside that have to heal so i am still on some restrictions for the next 4 weeks. If your job entails lifting I still have a problem and a restriction for lifting.
Everyone heals differently and your body will let you know what you can and cannot do. According to my Dr. I could return to regular activities as I feel I can handle them. There is no time frame basically I know better than anyone else what I can handle and so will you.
