LAVH: 2 week max recovery time? No pain meds?

So I went to my pre-op appt today.
I was told I'm having LAVH. Recovery time 4 to 14 days max. I can be back to work in a week, but can drive after 4 days.

I'll be admitted at 7am, surgery at 9am for about an hour, recovery about 30 minutes and back in my room afterward.

If I can pee on my own, hold down food and have pain under control, I can go home the same day. Some people stay. Some people go home.

When asked if I'd need any prescriptions afterward, I was told no. They advise using otc tylenol and should only need that for a couple of days. The gyn has yet to have any patients need anything prescription strength.

No bowel prep.

This doesn't sound so bad.

I have to wear this annoying huge red wrist bracelet, and I'm not permitted to take it off until 3 days after surgery.

I was so surprised at the no need for pain meds after being discharged and the 4-14 days max recovery time.

What planet is your surgeon living on? Seriously? I had a LAVH and I was in excruciating pain the first two days and on/off for 3/4 weeks after that. I went back to work at 5 weeks and with the restriction of no lifting for 3 additional weeks. You are having a major organ removed. I took percocet and motrin 600 mg for two weeks!

Re: LAVH: 2 week max recovery time? No pain meds?

This is what you can expect:

Gas pain...plan to have GasX on hand. Buy stool softeners and take them twice per day post op to help pass stools without hurting yourself. Plan on having help at home, you can't do any lifting or bending or twisting. I was told not to lift anything over 5 lbs for 2 weeks and then nothing over 10lbs until my post op at 7 weeks. Nothing in the vagina until you are cleared by your doctor at 6-8 weeks at least. I would request a prescription for pain pills "just in case". I didn't switch to OTC motrin until the 4th week of recovery though I didn't need the percocet much after the 2nd week.

Re: LAVH: 2 week max recovery time? No pain meds?

I don't even know what to think about my recovery now.
I asked a ton of questions, too. I'm absolutely sure this is what I was told because I have it all written down.

I even asked how long I should have help. I was told to do light housework for the first week. I should need a ride home from the hospital, but after that I should be ok as long as I rest for a few days. No reason for DH to take any time off work. 10 pound max weight for 4 days. 20 pounds for the next 10 days. Then no weight restriction.

Edited : He did say nothing in the vagina for 6 weeks. I asked about Gas X on my list of questions to ask. I was told not to bring them from home. If I need them the nurses will give them. They don't recommend anything be brought from home like that.

You are getting a LAVH? That is laproscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy. You still have your uterus removed. You still have stitches, lots of them internally. Are you keeping your cervix? Ovaries? Fallopian tubes?

Re: LAVH: 2 week max recovery time? No pain meds?

The red bracelet was given to me by the lab people. I had 8 tubes of blood taken. They gave me a bright hospital type bracelet not to remove until 3 days after surgery. It's to make me easier to treat if something goes wrong.

Yes, I'm having LAVH. I was told before that I was going to have just the TLH, but as of today it's changed to LAVH. I asked why it changed, and the doctor said he felt LAVH was better for me. I was fine with that.

I'm going to ask for a prescription just in case, but I hope I can get it. Then again, I hope I won't need anything.

The doctor was straight forward with me saying that it's going to pretty much be a breeze.

I truly hope it does go really easy for you Kiki but I do recommend you prepare just in case. Please have help the first few days and freeze up some meals in advance so your hubby can thaw them. Don't do any bending or lifting, please. Get lots and lots of rest.

Re: LAVH: 2 week max recovery time? No pain meds?

Thank you.
I already have some meals planned out.
I even set up my bill paying and such for 3 weeks because I didn't think I'd be up to thinking about bills for that time.
That's why I was so surprised to hear what I did today.

I sure hope the dr. gives me something to take home for pain because his office is an hour from my house. I'd hate to be home and in agony with no way to get anything. I have to have a written prescription for pain meds unlike antibiotics that can be sent to the pharmacy electronically.

I'm even getting my new recliner delivered tomorrow because I thought I may need to spend some time sleeping in it when I first come home.
