consented to taking ovaries but now nervous

i understand that if my dr has to take my ovaries, then that is just what has to happen. we discussed he would try to leave them both or just take one but now for some reason i am getting panicky about it.

I am fine with the hysterectomy, goodby uterus and cervix you bane of my existence!, but my ovaries i just know how i would deal with coming out of surgery to hear my dr had to take both...

Re: consented to taking ovaries but now nervous

Hello kalieyes,

I would be very upset too if that happened to me. But try to think positive. You have enough to deal with, without adding to your worries at this stage. Just try to deal with one day at a time.

The surgeon will definitely leave them if it's safe for you, and you know that whatever they do will be in your best interest.

If it helps you could talk with the docs about what could be done to help if that scenario were to become reality. I don't know if you would be able to have HRT or not?

Thinking of you. I prayed for you and hope all the support is helping.

Re: consented to taking ovaries but now nervous

I think a lot of it may matter depending on your age.

I am 55, and I was frankly more concerned about losing my cervix than losing my ovaries (on top of the cysts and the endo, I was still having periods and was sick of it). But, my doctor felt everything had to go, and he was right. Finally finishing menopause as part of the hysterectomy/oopherectomy was a win.

If you're under 40, I can see why conserving at least one ovary would be a good idea, but doctors, generally, do try to keep at least one ovary for younger women.

Re: consented to taking ovaries but now nervous

My insides were a mess, endo everywhere on everything, including my bladder and bowel. I still kept one ovary, that was the plan from the beginning though. I don't know your situation, but you can tell your doctor that you'd really like to keep one, or even part of one should work. If he/she knows how important it is to you, maybe they will try harder to keep one. My dr had to clean a ton of adhesions & endo off my ovary in order to leave it in there. And, if they do have to take both of yours, just give it to God and let Him worry about it. I know, easier than it sounds. Good luck. Life is so glorious after it's all over with!!!!!!!

Re: consented to taking ovaries but now nervous

The decision to keep or not to keep your ovary or ovaries is a personal and medical one.
While you are waiting for your surgery, ask your doctor questions?
If you are actively bleeding, you still may have hormones.
The hormones ars so important for overall health.
After my ovaries were removed, my general health declined.
I became a borderline diabetic, in addition to my hypertension and high cholesterol. I controlled all by watching what I ate, losing 40 or 45 pounds, and exercising.
The endocrinologist said that I was still had hormones at the time that I had my hysterectomy. The GYN/oncologist assumed at my age (54) that I no longer had hormones.
Check in with an internal medicine cancer doctor at the hospital. He or she is the one that determines if you need radiation or not.
You may not need radiation, but you may need assistance on making your decision of keeping on or two of your precious ovaries.

For me and endometriosis, my ovaries were the problem. Too much estrogen "feeding" my endo and cancerous cells.

I allowed both ovaries to be removed, and lo and behold, there was a "borderline proliferating tumor" found incidentally inside my left ovary.
