Hysterectomy scheduled 2/17 - nervous and lots of questions

I'm scheduled for a partial hysterectomy on 2/17, but have been advised it could turn into a complete hysterectomy. I'm okay with that. I am nervous about the surgery in general. To date, I just feel horrible on a daily basis - fatigue, nausea, irritability, back pain, cramping. I have more bad days than good. Do or did any of you have any of these symptoms and did they improve with surgery?

Thanks!

Re: Scheduled, nervous and lots of questions

I'm 13 days PO and I had all of the symptoms you describe and I have had none of them since surgery. I was really nervous before my surgery too, but my recovery has been relatively smooth, considering the fact that it is major surgery. Best advice I can give you is to stay on top of your pain medication and stool softener and drink lots of water and prune juice. I'm so happy I had it done and I wouldn't change it for anything. Good luck! You're going to feel so much better.

Re: Scheduled, nervous and lots of questions

Evening,

I'm a bunch of nerves too as I'm scheduled February 18th.
I have a large fibroid and I'm being told that incision is the best way for me since it' s so large. I'm really worried if I should keep or remove the cervix and how post op will be.
Hopefully, we will all feel better and have a better quality of
Life soon.

Wishing you the best of health!

Jill

I hope you are doing better. Anticipatory anxiety can be debilitating and cause all of those symptoms.

I have severe anxiety and panic attacks and these are the things that help me:
Splashing cold water on my face
Calling a good friend or family
Watch a funny movie or TV
Go for a nice walk outside
Meditation
Taking deep breaths
Visualize yourself recovering and feeling better
Changing scary thoughts to positive thoughts (not easy to do)

Remember to believe in yourself and believe in your medical team.

You are strong and courageous and you can and will do this!!! 💪

Hysterectomy scheduled 2/17 - nervous and lots of questions

As I understand it, an LAVH always involves removal of the cervix. My surgeon wanted to do that, but I expressed concern that my small vagina might not accomodate that approach, as well as a strong preference to keep my cervix; after further discussion, we agreed on LSH, which turned out exceptionally well. As for pre-op symptoms, I had nausea, from a fibroid-enlarged uterus pressing on my stomach; after I'd stopped taking the narcotics post-op, that completely disappeared. I was also nervous, especially because this would be my first major surgery. I found that keeping myself busy with my preparations, as well as scheduling a few enjoyable activities, really helped with that. After my surgery, I wondered what I was so nervous about! So hang in there; in two weeks, you'll be on the other side, and we'll be there with you! Best wishes for your upcoming surgery!
