narcotic pain meds before surgery

Has anyone who takes narcotic pain meds been told to stop taking them before their surgery?

I am on narcotic pain meds for my two weeks out of the month and I am totally incapacitated due to pain and bleeding. My doctor has not told me to stop taking them, only not to take any aspirin or ibuprofen products two weeks before the surgery.

If you aren't sure what your Dr wants, it is best to call him and ask. Even if some others here were allowed to take narcotics up to their surgery, your Dr may have different wishes for you

Honest, they don't mind these kinds of questions

I am also on pain meds. so, I am wondering the same thing. I guess I will have to ask when I go to my pre-op appointment. I am also on high blood preasure meds so I'm not sure if I can eve take them before surgery.

I took them right up until the night before my surgery. In fact, my Dr. gave me a refill about 6 days pre-op, so I'm sure she didn't have a problem with me taking them so close to surgery. But, as the other sisters said, every Dr. is different, so please ask. Better safe than sorry.

I have been on Lortab for almost two months now and it just stopped working for the pain. Today they put me on Percocet and that is actually knocking the pain down a bit, which is a huge relief. I have 2.3 weeks until my surgery and the doctor has no plans of having me stop them until the surgery. Chances are they won't have you stop them either, but as always, if in doubt ask your doctor.

I know the pain is very hard to deal with and is very exhausting. I have lost more time away from my job from the pain than the actual doctor visits, or anything else. I may be loopy until I go in for surgery, but at least I'll be pain free for a while. Yay!

Good luck and I'll see you online during recovery!

My doctor told me that I needed to stop taking my pain meds like 5 days prior to surgery. She said I wasn't even able to take tylenol or ibuprofen OTC. I can say that those days were pretty miserable. They were a little more bearable knowing that it would be on it's way to being over with very soon though. good luck!

Some medications can cause bleeding, like ibuprofen and aspirin, which is why they have you stop taking them before a surgery. Also, when I had my elbow done last month, my ortho doc told me no narcotics beforehand, because they wouldn't be as effective at pain control after the surgery. Just another thing to go over with your doc about, if you're unsure of what they want you to do, give 'em a call!

I take morphine on a daily basis for chronic pain. My doc told me that I can take that the morning of surgery with my other meds and a SIP of water. Like previously suggested, it is always best to hear it from your doc to be sure.

My doc took me off the Ibuprofen all-together and I had to start taking Percocet prior to surgery. She said no NSAIDS...

Hope that helps!
