hernia-yikes!

Has anyone else had a post-op incisional hernia? I've had one for about 6 months, and find, after valiant attempts at denial and ignoring, that it will have to be repaired. It is quite huge (grapefruit-sized) and getting bigger all the time. The surgeon wants to use mesh for the repair, but after all the scary things I've been reading about the various complications with the materials (chronic pain, chronic infection, etc), I really want more info. Has anyone had mesh used for a hernia repair? Any advice?

my mom had problems with the mesh she had put in after her hernia repair and eventually had to have another surgery to remove it and her belly button. i had an umbilical hernia and told the dr i did not want any type of mesh put in because of the problems she had, and he agreed. he repaired the hernia and stitched the area up tightly inside without using mesh. talk to your surgeon about your concerns and if you dont feel comfortable with what he says..get another opinion. i hope everything goes well for you.

My husband had a large embelical hurnia, they used mesh and he has had no problems at all, I remember the Dr. saying that the mesh made the area a lot stronger so the hurnia wouldn't happen again.
