Terrified

I'm 35 and my uterus doesn't want to stay in place so my doctor recommended hysterectomy while I was in surgery for my bladder sling. I'm so afraid of surgery. My doctor isn't the best as explaining what to expect I've been scheduled to meet with him on the 23rd and for surgery on the 25th. Any suggested questions to bring up to ask him in my pre op consultation?

Re: Terrified

The best advice I could give you would be to look at the info here. They really describe the procedures and what you might expect. I know a lot of my questions were about what he was going to do, how long to recuperate, what are potential problems. I would probably ask for more specifics of the surgery. Let him know you are afraid so he may be able to make you more comfortable.

Re: Terrified

First, take a deep breath! Hearing that word, "hysterectomy" brought out so many emotions in me and I was scared. I did ok and hopefully, everything will go smoothly for you.

You can find a good list of questions on the Pre-Op page along with a lot of other great articles to help you prepare! (You can also find the Pre-Op page by clicking on 'Pre-Op' in the blue bar at the top of the page under the HysterSisters logo).

Questions for your Pre-Op Hysterectomy Appointment

I encourage you to grab a notebook or notepad and jot down questions you have as you think of them. Take the notebook with you to your appointment so you can write the answers down.

You should also check out Hysterectomy Checkpoints for even more awesome information!

Also, you have March 25, 2011 as your hysterectomy date. Do you mean May? Be sure it's correct and you can make changes by clicking on 'User CP' in the purple bar at the top of the page.

Hang in there! We're here for you!

Re: Terrified

Hopefully you got some idea of the types of questions you want answered for your particular surgery. It can be very stressful to suddenly be facing this but there is a lot of really good tips here and lots of ladies who have been in your position at some point.

Re: Terrified

It's understandable to be afraid, but knowledge will help. Find out all you can about your prospective surgery and how it's done, and why it's done. Focus on the benefits you will get from it, and why it's worth it.

Get a second opinion and a third, if it will give you peace of mind. If everyone agrees, then go for it. If not--maybe you will find a better alternative you can live with.

Find lots of support here. And if you do have the surgery, then prep as well as you can--that will help you feel calmer and more prepared. There's tons of threads here about what to do to get ready and how to pass the time while you wait for the big day.

Re: Terrified

i, too, was scared out of my mind... i was dealing with a fairly large tumor/twisted tube and basically dead ovary. surgery was to come fast so i didn't have to think too long... but unfortunately i chose to postpone because my grandpa passed away the day before surgery. it sounds very strange... but that was probably a really good thing for me (selfishly). because of that... i was able to find this website and read and learn so much. ask questions... as you are. just breath... it helps. know that people here, and i'm sure where you live, want to help you. a very good friend told me.. just try to relax and let people help YOU. i tried very hard to do just that the morning i went to the hospital. then keep relaxing...you need to. one other very good thing i learned... breath deeply at least 4-5 times every hour afteryour surgery - it helps reduce the gas you'll get in your shoulders afterward. i did this... and it worked. good luck to you! you're gonna do great!
