Complex Hyperplasia w/o Atipia at this time

Hi

I too received a diagnosis of Complex Hyperplasia w/o Atypia. For me it was Hysterectomy all the way. My maternal Aunt had died of Endometrial Cancer at the age of 50 - I'm 40. I'm sure that she had exhibited all of my symptoms but just brushed them off to menopause. Knowing that I could go down that road I said no way - take it out!! For me it was the best decision I could have made. No more d&c's every six months - worrying like crazy that this time its going to be cancer. I wanted definitive treatment and was not willing to try any of the drugs out there - my personal decision.

Only you can decide what's right for you. For information you are definately in the right place - I was reading these boards for almost a year before I had my TAH.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Julie

I am a bit nervous about the effects hormore treatment can cause. I guess I will see what I am told tomorrow.

I think you're on the right path to making a decision that's right for YOU! Arming yourself with information, talking to docs and asking lots of questions. I was diagnosed with complex hyperplasia with atypia (was surprised when insurance still considers a hysterectomy an "elective procedure") so the choice to have a hysterectomy was the only route that made sense to me. Because of my age (53), I also have opted to have cervix, ovaries and tubes removed. You might want to make a list of pros and cons. I would think continuing to have d & c's and biopsies plus painful ooogy periods would be on the minus side, but that's just me. Good luck...trust your instincts and remember we're all different as has been noted so many times before...we're all here for each other!

Well went to the specialist today and after talking with him then talking to my own GYN and speaking to my husband I am going to have the hyterectomy.

I am a newvous wreck but I think it is better to have this done now then to wait until it turns to cancer. Plus constantly having D&C's would not be fun. Not to mention that the meds they would put me on would not help my cholesterol which I must also watch.

I am scheduled to go in on the 20th.

Like I said I am nervous. Anyone care to tell me what to expect?

Recipelady,

I'm glad your visit with specialist helped you to make a decision. Do you mind my asking what his thoughts were on keeping the hyperplasia at bay with Provera or Prometrium? I go in two weeks for my second opinion. I hope it helps me come to a clear-cut decision. Let us know how you are doing, I will watch for your posts. Good luck to you!

I asked him about hormones. He said he would not give me Provera but something that was 10 times stronger due to my condition. I can not remember the name but it did begin with a "M".

He said that while I can take hormones I would need a D&C. In time the bleeding would stop but could also come back. If it did (and even if it did not) they would do another D&C. He said that if I go on hormones I would need to lose at least 50 pounds.

The specialist also told me that 94%of his patients on hormones land up getting the surgery because they can not deal with the hormones and how they make them feel.

In my case the medication would also affect my cholesterol (LDL's) in a negative way. THey are already high and the meds would make it worse.

I do not know if this helped or not, I sure hope it does.

My own GYN will be doing my surgery and she is also sending me for a Pelvic Untrasound to determine if they will do it vaginally or through the abdomin. She will also check my overies to see if they really need to come out (I may just tell her to take them).

So far I like her answers and attitude toward it all opposed to the specialist. He had no personality at all. He had a matter of fact attitude. Although he is good my doc has rave reviews as well.

As nervous as I am, the 20th an not come fast enough.

Now I really have to make time and read what you have here. ANyone have any suggestions on thread or areas I should check out. I need all the info I can get.

Good Luck Maggiemay please let mek now how you make out and what you decide.

Shawn,
I tried taking Prometrium (200 mg./day) for 3 months and did not take estrogen during this time. This was done in order to try to "resolve" the complex hyperplasia (with atypia). Even though Prometrium is bio-identical, I hated what I felt like while taking it -- crabby, moody, out-of-sorts, just obnoxious. This is not what I'm usually like. But it DID buy me some time to think about the hysterectomy and read as much as I could. Everything I read indicated that I should have a hysterectomy. I did, and everything turned out fine. My pathology report from the surgery indicated that I had a number of other problems, including Grade I endometrial cancer, which made me glad that I had gone ahead with the surgery. . . . My relationship with my DH seems the same as it was before surgery. And it is often difficult to figure out the right "balance" of hormones after surgery. It sometimes requires a lot of trial-and-error.

You may not ever get to the point where you are 100% certain that you're doing the right thing, but hopefully you will get to the point where you are at peace with your decision. Good luck.

I see TAH and BSO what are all the other abbreviations? Is this listed somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Question for home recovery.

I would like to start the pre work on my recovery at home. I do not have a recliner and my one couch is not comfortable at all (the other couch is too new and in front of a picture window so this one is out).

I do have a queen sized Aero Bed. It can be made real firm or not. The only thing is that it sits 9 inches off the floor. How would this be along with tons of pillows?

My bed sits very high off the floor and I need to hop to get into it so I can not see me getting in and out of that with care.

Thanks again.

Another question but comments first

I am going to have the Hyterectomy. I go in on January 20th. My doctor said that if my ovaries look good she can keep them but I am almost 41 and also think that maybe I should have them out.

I hear good and bad about keeping them and am just not sure about it yet.

My doctor does not believe in hormones so either way I may not be taking them. Is this good or bad? I WILL be asking about bioidenticals.

I do have a questions, if I have the ovaries removed, how long with the menopause symtoms last? Do they last long or not? How bad are they? Are they as if you are going through them natrually or worse?
