How long?
This is my second day home and I still have not had a BM. I think a lot of my pain is because of this. I have taken the stool softeners like they suggested and drinking a lot. I don't want to do anything to end up with diahrrea because I have problems with hemoroids sometimes but I would really like to go to the bathroom. Any suggestions?

How long?
Hi DC, I was worried about that too. My Mom convinced me I hadn't eaten enough yet to worry about because I was totally empty. But I got worried and drank Smooth Move tea and took some milk of magnesia. I finally did go but it was a crampy and I wish I had just let nature take it's course. I didn't go until 5 days post op and it was not painful at all, aside from the cramps. I was worried I would get backed up. I still take my stool softeners. I remember with my kids the Dr. always said not to worry about frequency, worry about consistency. So if you finally do go and it is what my kids would call rocks, then I think you are constipated. If you finally go and it is soft and normal, then I don't think you are constipated. That is just my opinion, no medical training here, only a Mom! LOL I personally would not worry until Tuesday, unless your Dr. tells you otherwise and you feel pain. Just my opinion, I was getting worried too and it finally happened without straining. I think you want to avoid that no matter what.
Oh, and my family is tired of me saying "I pooped", so I am going to stop telling them now! LOL
Good luck!
Sandra

b.m.
i didn't have my first b.m. until day 11 post surgery. at first i was taking colace (stool softener) plus senekot (natural laxative). finally b.m., but very liquidy, like diarrhea. i also try to avoid diarrhea, so i have stopped the stool softener and am just taking the laxative. my b.m.'s are normal consistency, but takes some sitting on the toilet and gentle "pushing" to eject . i'm going to start taking one more dose per day of the senekot in the hopes that the b.m.'s will drop out more easily. (sorry for my vocabulary...lol...i just can't think of the proper words to use!)
good luck!
p.s. i'm still taking narcotic pain medications, so in my case, that is why i am constipated. once i'm off the pain meds, i hope that mother nature will take over.

How long?
1) Pain meds 2) Bowel prep 3) Not eating much will make you not have a bm for several days. There may not be enough to stimulate one or pain meds will dull the urge. I had Metamucil wafers with breakfast every morning and drank a lot of water and had my first BM about 7 days after surgery. I didn't have to push or strain (not good to do after surgery) and it took longer than if I had pushed but it happened. The best thing to do is sit and wait if you have the urge. Our bodies can be retrained because BM are supposed to be naturally pushed out by intestinal contractions and not from us using extra force. I eat breakfast, drink hot tea, and head to the bathroom (bring a book).

How long?
Hi DC4ever
The ladies here have given you a lot of good information already. My experience was that it helped a lot to take the stool softeners so when it did happen I knew it wouldn't be too hard to move. They didn't do the trick for me all by themselves. On the fifth day I took some Milk of Magnesia and it worked for me, but gave me an episode of diarrhea. In retrospect I wouldn't have taken a full dose.
It is still early for you. I agree with the comment that you probably don't have much in your system. Don't panic, but if you aren't successful in the next few days, call and ask your dr what s/he would suggest for you.
's, Rita

How long?
hi DC4ever
There isnt much I can add on here that the other sisters havent already covered.
I was 4days postop when I had my first BM and to be honest I was quite surprised because from what I have read on here it is very quite normal to go 5, 6 7 ,11 days without one.
I have been drinking lots of water and juice, took my stool softner daily and just waited.
I wouldnt worry too much unless you start having pain then maybe talk to your dr.

How long?
I was 6 days post op and was taking MOM for three days before I had my first BM. I am not normal though because I have IBS so the littlest thing gets my bowels out of whack for a while... I am going to be three weeks out and I am finally back to what I deem "normal".....
Don't worry... this too shall pass....

Thanks everyone
Thanks for all the response. It makes me feel a lot better. I have been taking stool softeners since I got home and late yesterday I did have a small BM and it was easy so I am going to let nature take its course. I'm avoiding laxatives because they say they are harsh to your system. Plus I don't want loose stools because I have problems with hemoroids and I don't want that to deal with on top of everything else. All in all I feel pretty good today. Some pain but nothing the pain meds to take care of and I am slowly winding down off of them too. I have been on them for a long time pre-op so I have to wean my self off of the pain meds too so it is a slow process but my family is being wonderful about doing everything. I just supervise. We even had a turkey dinner last night with my guidance. It was wonderful. Thank all of you for your help and support. I don't think I could have made it through all this without your help. You answered so many questions that I wouldn't have gotten answers to - you are all wonderful!!!
