Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
Ok sisters. LSH/BSO one week ago. I heard the swelly belly is less with LSH (compared to what I dont know, its not like we are all sitting next to each other in my living room comparing LOL). I know my current experience is very normal for one week out - heck - stuff is missing and rearranging in there.
I wake up with a flat belly and by bedtime, I've got the 5 mo pregnant hard belly thing going on. I know medically, we are retaining fluid in injured tissues - just like a sprained ankle. I ice everynight before bed. I have no stitches and only two incisions.
Big question - how long does this really last. When could you wear your normal jeans all day and not obsess about the big belly? I see a lot of extreme stories - trying to figure out what will be normal?
THanks girls - you all rock!

Re: Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
Its difficult to say because every woman heals differently. I've seen some post about swelly belly for 5-6 months even after having DvH & LAVH. I've seen some post swelly belly was almost gone after a couple of months after having TAH.
Me.........TAH..........still have swelly belly after 4 months but it is getting better by the weeks.
I also think how "active" you are will make a difference also. Its easy to over-do things when you feel pretty good. Then there are days when you don't "think" you've done much but that swelly belly will let you know that you did.

Re: Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
Me..TAH/BSO.. or as I like to refer to it as "All pieces and parts are gone"..
Question? What exactly is all of this swelling caused from (I know..the surgery).. What I mean is..Is it fluid retention or tissues swelling or shifted fat.. And what can I do to get rid of it. I thought going in to this surgery, I would have this done and boom..skinnier days were ahead. I have lost 12lbs iin the 3 weeks since surgery. I'm guessing it's the volleyball sized cyst they removed:-) Any tips on foods that may help the bloating?

Your tissues have been traumatized from the surgery, and are reacting to that. I really wouldn't consider it bloating like you get before your period or after you eat a big meal.
I had a TAH and was back in my usual clothes at the 6 week mark when I returned to work. Some women have swelly belly for much much longer.
There is nothing you can do to get rid of it. It just takes time.
Here's to good healing

Re: Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
It obviously is an individual thiing. I don't feel I have had swelly belly at all, only a pouch of skin and goodness knows what else above my TAH incision. I basically just had everything removed for precancerous endometrium, no other pathology. My impression (although this could be wrong) is that those with endo and therefore more complicated surgery have more swelly belly.

That definetly makes sense! I have a pouch too..next to my belly button. Ill be glad when that one is down. I might get crazy today and try on a pair of pants. Have pajamas become everyone's new best friend?

Re: Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
Thanks Sisters. Swelly belly or not, I put my jeans on this morning and am still wearing them. Granted, they were a skosh big before and now fit kind of normally, and they do have that touch of stretch in them, but I am wearing them and glad to have them on. Wanted to see if I could stand them all day. Havent done much today - have been walking some and doing things around the house - but have not laid down. Today is my one week mark and I decided it was time to "get dressed everyday" whether I go out or not. I may get into my jammies pants right after dinner, but hooray for a small victory, I guess?

Re: Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
I aksed the doctor and she said that it is fluid in the cells (the sprained ankle analogy). I was in good shape going in, had a really uncomplicated situation (plain fibroids) and an uncomplicated SAH with a very skilled surgeon and still have almost constant swelly belly. Our bodies seem to be the big random factor in all of this.

Re: Sisters : What's the real scoop on the swelly belly?
I'm 4.5 months post op and still have a big swelly belly. I can only wear yoga pants and my jeans can only stay on for 10 minutes. And I've lost weight since surgery... At first I was accepting, then I thought it was cute, then I got sick of it and now I downright hate my belly. It swells so much my skin hurts.
