8 weeks post hysterectomy: Nervous about incuding Vaginal Vault Prolapse

Hi
I'm 8 weeks post op hysterectomy. Everything seems fine. I'm reading a lot about 40% of post hysterectomy patients develop vaginal vault prolapse. I am just getting back into exercise. Walking 5-6 miles per day. After all the reading I am now nervous that the walking could induce/develop a prolapse. I have no symptoms and at this time am just nervous. I am doing kegals. Is there anything else preventative I can do?
How long after surgery would one experience prolapse if it were to be an issue?

Re: 8 weeks post hysterectomy: Nervous about incuding Vaginal Vault Prolapse

I question the accuracy of 40% - there are sites out there that have an agenda and have been know to misquote, misconstrue, and post falsehoods. According to an abstract in the National Institute of Health, "The incidence of prolapse, which required surgical correction following hysterectomy, is 3.6 per 1000 person-years of risk. The cumulative risk rises from 1% three years after a hysterectomy to 5% 15 years after hysterectomy. Also the risk of prolapse following hysterectomy is 5.5 times in women whose initial hysterectomy was for genital prolapse as opposed to other reasons." It indeed mentions that some studies have reported up to 43% but, interestingly, doesn't cite the study (another source I found didn't cite the study with the high number either - hmmm!). If the rates were high, seems there'd be a whole lot more chatter here about vaginal prolapse after a hysterectomy here at HysterSisters. Some surgeons do reattach ligaments to the cuff to minimize the risk of prolapse post-op.

Unless you were dealing with prolapse issues beforehand, I doubt there would be too many doctors who'll tell you not to exercise because you had a hysterectomy. The key is to get back to it gradually. I was walking 3 miles by 6 weeks post-op. At 7 weeks, I resumed a weekly cardio-weight class, keeping everything low impact. At 8-1/2 weeks, I got back into interval running (alternating 3 mins of walking and running) keeping the running at a shuffle step. By 12 weeks, I was running a full 3 miles normally. I'm also back to higher intensity cardio and weight work.

There's an old saying, "Don't trouble Trouble 'til it troubles you". Not to say you shouldn't be aware of the possibility, but you're more likely to be healthier for exercising than to experience prolapse.
