Stairs after RALH
My daVinci surgery is scheduled for 4/10/09, in response to a positive diagnosis for endocervical adenocarcinoma (me and my medical team are confident this was an early catch).
I live alone, and my bedroom and bathroom are up 8 stairs from the rest of my home (food, dvd player, outside world).
Will I be restricted from using the stairs immediately after the RALH? If so, for how long, typically?
I appreciate any wisdom and/or advice! I would like to be as prepared as possible beforehand as to what to expect.

Stairs after RALH
I asked my dr at my pre-op appt about stairs, and he said I could go up and down stairs. What he wasn't specific about was that the post-op instructions were to make only one or two round trips on the stairs for the first week.
i have a two story house, with my DVR/cable/DVD player in the basement, and my bedroom/shower on the 2nd floor. I had to camp out in the first floor family room (TV but no DVR,etc) for most of the first week, just making one trip up to the computer (top floor) once a day.
I thought the restrictions were not necessary until I tried that 3rd trip one day. Yep, they were right.
After that first week, I didn't restrict myself at all, and had no problem with stairs.
May just take you some planning ahead to make it bearable. good luck!

Stairs after RALH
Talk to your doctor preop to make arrangements. I had same surgery 2/24, I live mostly on one floor- could do stairs if I had to but SLOWLY for the first few days. Maybe you can bring as much of your needed items to your "recovery place" (mine was the living room couch) ahead of time. I used 2 tray tables set up near me for the first 2 weeks with telephone, book, pain meds, glasses, remote, etc so my wandering around to find stuff was at a minimum. Best of luck to you.

Stairs after RALH
I have to admit that I do not know what a RALH is, so I will just tell of my experience.
I had an LSH. I cam home the next day. My house is build on five levels and my bedroom is 40 some-odd steps above my front door. I was able to go up there without any trouble. Just took it slow. I did not come down for the first few days. My kitchen is 20 steps down from the bedrooms......once I went down there, there were no problems.
My advice, just take it slow. Hold on the the handrail and again, take is slow.

Hi there, from a former "scardy cat".
I live alone too...basically as have 2 boys who are grown and never here...I am post op 10 days LAVH/BSO, I came home after the general aneth. wore off and walked up my indoor 13 steep stairs. I have gone up and down as needed for food runs....etc. If you live with stairs you know that whatever you need is where you aren't. So I was told no restrictions by my Dr. FYI everyday the more I walked upstairs and tried the stairs more and more the faster I felt my stamina coming back. To be honest I am in a better place than it sounds like a majority of the others in my week. I think the stairs helped. You will be fine!!!
Let me know...most of the gals sound like they have DH and great friends...me ..........not so much .....alone...

Stairs after RALH
Hi Gypsy 714
I asked my surgeon about stairs and he put no restrictions except take my time. I had surgery on Friday, home on Saturday and up the 18 steps that afternoon. I did them several times every day and walked a lot as we were house shopping. No problems. Just for the record I am not one of those young fit women. I am sedentary, 35 pounds overweight and 66 years old.
You shouldn't have any problems but good luck anyway

Stairs after RALH
I live alone in a 2-story house and have two very busy little dogs. I had no restrictions for the stairs except to go slowly. I did have weight restrictions of 5 pounds so I made sure that whoever was checking on me for the day did whatever lifting I needed done. My hardest problem was to keep my dogs from pouncing on me whenever I sat or laid down.
I walked around my house and up/down the stairs A LOT! I have a blood clotting disorder and my surgeon told me that being a couch 'tater was a no-no.
