what worries me the most.....

I have never had any surgery, but have been at the hospital with my dad and have seen him go through horrific recoveries from general anesthesia, nausea, vomiting, the whole nine yards! So what worries me the most is, I am soooo prone to motion sickness and nausea (a cruise almost ruined our honeymoon 26 years ago ) Can't fly without Dramamine! Amusement park rides... forget about it! So I'm guessing these are concerns I can bring up with the anesthesiologist. Can and will they give a preventative with anesthesia? Hope someone can help. Have my hospital pre op tomorrow morning. Thanks Sisters!!!

I had some sort pf anti-nausea patch placed behind my ear just before surgery and had no problems.

Re: what worries me the most.....

ljp0824,

Great question, same concern I had pre-op. I made it a point to tell the anesthesiologist, and anyone working with him, that I get sick easily from anesthesia. It worked. I woke from my hyster feeling fine, no nausea. There are several things they can do, just make it clear you will need something.

Wishing you an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery.

Re: what worries me the most.....

I'm sure they can. Before my csection I was given a nasty tasting liquid that was supposed to help calm my stomach so I didn't throw up, I'm sure they can do the same for this!

Re: what worries me the most.....

Yes, I had exactly the same fear because after my last 2 surgeries, I was really very sick upon waking up from anesthetic. The last thing you want to do is vomit after abdominal surgery. I spoke at length with my anesthesiologist during pre-op and then again the morning of surgery. He assured me I would not wake up with nausea or vomiting, and he was true to his word. He told me they would administer 3 anti-nausea drugs in recovery; not sure what they used, but I can tell you whatever was used worked perfectly. I never even felt a tad queasy in recovery or back in the room. I never had problems with queasiness or nausea/vomiting when I was allowed to resume eating. In fact, my problem was that I was starving and could NOT eat due to the clear liquid diet for the first 24 hours. Honestly, I was ready to eat as soon as I got back to the room after recovery.

Just stress to the anesthesiologist and your doctor that you want everything possible to avoid nausea. I was really skeptical that I would wake up feeling fine, and I was so pleased with my results. I did a whole lot of worrying pre-op for no reason at all.

Best of luck to you!

Re: what worries me the most.....

Last couple surgeries I've had they put a dramamine patch behind my ear... if at all you feel a change and are nauseated, tell them right away! They can add something to your IV to help. My last surgery they kept using Zophran but that didn't work to well on me so I'm going to demand my ol' fav - Phenergan... (Note: Zophran normally works well on most folks, in fact it is used on cancer patients undergoing chemo and radiation... I don't know why it didn't work well for me)
