weight plateau from fibroids?

hi. i don't have my hysterectomy scheduled yet, but am hoping to shortly after the first of the month, when i make my first "official" visit yet again, after finally obtaining insurance once again.

i am most definitely in need of one, after 4 different opinions. it's just had to be postponed for a really long time, as i switched jobs, and haven't been able to afford the ins. now, i start up with it again on 09/01, and have my appt set for 09/05. my dr is waiting with anticipation. hopefully we'll be able to get it scheduled before the holidays.

just for my own curiosity, i am wondering - has anyone had any issues with either weight gain, or a weight plateau due to having fibroids? i used to be able to lose weight. but now - no matter how much i go to the gym, etc, i can never lose more than 10 lbs. and i have a lot more than that to lose. but it's already been said that one fibroid is growing at a steady rate - 2 1/2 yrs ago, it was the size of a green grape. i hate to think of what it is now. but it is non-cancerous. or, well, was then. i haven't had any more biopsies done, due to lack of ins.

i'm just very frustrated between the constant pain that seems to linger now, the spasms i get from the fibroid being irritated, the weight that won't leave, the fact that i have NO energy whatsoever, any longer, and now, even though i have the mirena to stop the extremely heavy monthly bleeding, and haven't had a period in 3 yrs, i've started back up again having periods........

i would greatly appreciate any opinions, advice, anything.

thanks so much!

Re: weight plateau from fibroids?

Aidycakes, I can relate to what you are referring to. I have fibroids as well. I go to the gym everyday and was on a low carb diet and my weight wouldn't budge. I never could figure it out then as I started to have more period issues I had ultrasound and discovered fibroids. I then asked my dr about the weight issues/frustrations I was having and he confirmed that fibroids played a part in all that. I am scheduled for surgery next week and I hope it solves many problems I am having. Good luck!!!

Re: weight plateau from fibroids?

soccerlove - ty so much for telling me that. i really needed to hear it. i'm starting to get really depressed about it all. i'm going on vaca for the first time ever, next week - and no matter my attempts at trying to lose just 10-20 lbs over the past 2 months - it's NOT happening. its very aggravating.

good luck to you next week! i can honestly say i'm envious..........my surgery has been put on hold for 5 yrs now. i hope it helps you with everything you've went through because of it!!!

Ditto...I have been living on egg whites and cucumbers and the scale has barely made a dent in the past month. I have my hysterectomy next week. I hope weight loss will get easier afterwards.

Good Luck To You!

Re: weight plateau from fibroids?

I lost about 30 lbs before surgery. Actually, if I hadn't lost that weight, I probably would not have found my fibroids until much later. So yes, you can lose weight even though you have fibroids.

Re: weight plateau from fibroids?

Yup, me too. I had a huge fibroid (size of a twenty week pregnancy) and the last six months before surgery I seemed completely unable to lose weight and, in fact, kept gaining little by little. It was so discouraging! The good news is that I've lost 9 lbs. since surgery!

That is such great news! I just spoke with someone today who told me that her daughter lost a ton of weight after her surgery because the body burns more calories to heal.

I hope that is true!

On another note, how on earth did you Dani lose 30 pounds before surgery! It's nice to know it's possible, but it would be nicer to know how it is possible.

Re: weight plateau from fibroids?

I started walking. It took me a year and half. I started walking 5 km daily and then increased to to 10 km during the week and 12 on the weekends. I didn't really diet but I did watch what I was eating... portion control basically. That got 30 lbs off of me.

The week before surgery I also lost some extra weight through stress, lost more after the surgery, gained some back and am on my way down again. I am at 42 lbs off now. I am counting calories at this point to finish getting to my first goal weight as I plateaued over the winter. I am 5'5" and want to get to 144 as my first goal and then maybe at 135. I have 4 or 5 lbs to go to get to 144. This is slow and steady but it seems to be working.
