Upcoming hysterectomy 3/16: Disappointed with time set for surgery. Need advice please
I had hoped for a morning surgery appointment. My daughter is a nurse and she said everyone wants those morning slots. (Duh!) Well, needless to say, I got the call today from the hospital and I am supposed to check in there at noon on the 16th. So that means my surgery could still be a couple of hours later. She said no food or water after midnight. I said if my appt was at 8 am you would tell me to eat or drink nothing after midnight. She agreed. So now the appt is many hours later and still nothing after midnight.?? Do you ladies have any advice for me on how to do this?

Re: Disappointed with time set for surgery. Need advice please
Midnight is the standard deadline for eating and drinking. When I had my D&C, it was at 3 PM. I was told to be at the hospital at 1 PM - but still nothing to eat or drink after midnight. It was a chilly, rainy day and since I couldn't even have a hot drink, I just couldn't get warm. I kept putting on layers and layers of sweaters, also two pairs of woolen socks. I arrived at the hospital with a parka and rubber boots pulled on over everything else I was already wearing!
So, yeah, not being able to eat or drink anything for several hours is miserable. But sometimes that's what you have to do.
Note: if you're diabetic and have trouble maintaining your blood sugar levels, make sure your hospital knows this, as they may modify your instructions.

Some hospitals are more liberal and allow clear liquids 2-4 hrs pre op but apparently your hospital isn't among those. You can set an alarm for 1130 PM and hydrate well then, which helped me. You can request an earlier time but they sometimes have a system for assigning times. I had an 1100 time which moved along quickly, but sometimes there's a wait. I think it's true that AM times are coveted. Best wishes for an on-time surgery.

I had a large surgery last Year and my time was 2pm. I kept busy all morning to keep my mind off things. It's hard but feasible. I was only allowed liquids for the 3 days prior as well. Call and see if you're allowed liquids up to the 2-3 hr before arrival time. We are allowed here.

Four years ago I had lapband surgery and was scheduled for 10 but really ended up having my surgery around 2:30 because the doctor was delayed. I guess it was nerves but I really was not either hungry or thirsty during the wait.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 3/16: Disappointed with time set for surgery. Need advice please
Assuming you're asleep by then. I spent the evening before my surgery dealing with my emotions by scrubbing everything in the apartment. Since I had three miles to walk to get to the hospital the next morning - two miles to the local bus station, another mile from the destination station to the hospital - I was worried about experiencing hypoglycemia. I'd been told clear liquids only after 5 PM. So there I was, running around with a scrub brush in one hand and a two-litre bottle of peach/white grape juice in the other. Scrub, slug, scrub, slug. I'll never be able to drink peach/white grape juice again!
At midnight, I put the juice away, finished up the scrubbing, got my bag packed and took a shower. I finally went to bed about 1 AM. Then I couldn't sleep. *Then* I had to get up at 5 AM to go catch my bus.
By the time I got to the hospital, I was too tired to be hungry, thirsty, panicked or even nervous. I was agreeable to anything that would let me lie down and close my eyes. The nurse could shave me, put compression stockings on me, stick an IV in me, whatever as long as I could keep lying down! I was finally wheeled into the OR just before noon.

Hey Sister! I lucked out with the 8am surgery (6:30 show up). I think you plan stuff out of the house Monday morning. What about getting Easter candy supplies or making a new decoration? It's going to be hard, but just think of the good times ahead

Once you get to the hospital , you'll be kept comfortable and the time will go quickly, so you'll only have to pass the time from when you wake up, till you leave for the hospital.
I stayed upstairs in my bedroom, as I am a coffee drinker and didn't want to see my beloved coffee pot! I fiddled around on my computer and packed...hey, you could come here to pass some time

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 3/16: Disappointed with time set for surgery. Need advice please
Okay - funny story... I was a little down yesterday about the appointment time so I just kept very busy. I cleaned the house and kept my granddaughter busy. She is a toddler so you get the picture! Anyway, I was exhausted and fell into bed well after midnight. The next thing I knew, it was 10 am. I couldn't believe it. Maybe that will be my plan for tomorrow. I will continue with busy work and stay well hydrated up until midnight. Then I will take an ambien. (Doctors ok'd it) Maybe I will set my alarm for 9am. The hospital is an hour drive away. There you go. Not a very long wait anymore!
