Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
I am hoping I am not the only one here who is questionable about the way their recovery is going. My hysterectomy was on June 3 2015 and it was laparoscopic, both ovaries removed.
As of right now I am at the point where I am bored to death of my recovery. I am an a 37 year old active mother of 5 who also substitute teaches and helps train my husband with his motocross races. However, I get so tired when I try to do my normal routine. I hate it.
I am having cramps and still the discharge that my other friends who had the surgery say they were over by this point, but my doctor says is normal. I know I have been resting. Yes, I pushed my limits once or twice (maybe 3 times), but it was not anything that caused bodily harm. It just made me tired and force myself to rest extra. Also, I have already had an allergic reaction twice to my HRT and been on two weekly rounds of steroids in my 4 week recovery time. I am on my 3rd go round of HRT. I am really feeling at my lowest right now. I even went up 3 sizes in my clothes almost one week it seems.
I feel like I am letting my family down constantly and it is not helping my morale with the weight gain, hormone imbalance and recovery. I really do feel like I am breaking down instead of going back up. This surgery was supposed to help, but I am daily trying to fight being tired, depressed and not bugging my triage nurse at the doctors office with my 1,000 questions of "Is this normal". Am I the only one?

Re: Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
We are very glad to have you join us! We all heal at our own rate from hysterectomy so it's difficult to compare ourselves to others. Doctors usually give us a range of what's "normal", and it is normal to still be spotting at the 5 week point.
Recovery is boring and frustrating and exhausting. There is a lot of trial and error finding out how much activity is ok before we over-do. And often this can change on a daily basis! I took the perspective of feeling empathy with my body, it had been through a major trauma and was doing its best to heal and recover. You have the added difficulty of surgical menopause and balancing your hormones. This can take some time and tweaking to get them just right and requires patience too.
Try to ignore your pants size for a while, all that matters right now is comfort. I didn't even look at my jeans for 3 months. You may be experiencing swelly belly from the surgery. This isn't fat, but added fluids from the trauma of surgery and can take a few months to go away completely.
You are not letting your family down. This is not a quick fix surgery, it really takes some time to heal from hysterectomy. I wasn't cleared for all activities until 8 weeks and even then I couldn't do any heavy housework for several more months. You only have one chance to heal right, and this body is your's for life. I found it helped to measure my progress in weeks, rather than days.
And no, you are not alone in how you feel! Please come here for hugs, support, and to ask your questions. Explore the site and check out the Post Op Articles List.
Hang in there Sweetie, it gets better!

Re: Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
The tiredness is a normal part of the recovery. I think some women feel it more than others. I would feel exhausted from the least little thing for many weeks, and sometimes it would hit randomly. It slowly got better. For now, when you feel tired, don't fight it! That is your body telling you that you need to rest!
I will second sugarandspice's advice about the pants size...just ignore it! Buy some bigger pants to wear for now. You will be so much more comfortable, and you won't have the anxiety of trying to put on pants that are too tight. The swelling takes a while to go down, plus if you were on steroids that's probably causing some swelling for you too.
Good luck!

Re: Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
This is week 5 for me too. I get very sleepy all of a sudden and want to lay down. I did this a lot over the weekend. I'm very bored and not interested in anything right now. I try to read a book and I get very sleepy. I want to make list of things I would like to do when I'm better but I'm just not interested. I have a pain in my left pelvic side and it sometimes wraps around to that side of my back. I'm worried that this pain won't go away. I have a doctors appointment on Friday and I hope things improve by then. I''m praying that I get better soon. I want to get back to normal and better then I normally was before the surgery. Is anyone else having side pain in the pelvic area?

It's OKAY. Don't let your mind get ahead of your body. Your body is adjusting and healing. Let it.

Re: Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
I know exactly how you feel. Today was a sleep day for me. I had my hysterectomy 7 weeks ago and they had to go back in two weeks ago and remove my ovary due to a cyst that had grown so large it had attached to my abdominal wall and bowels. Some days I feel great and some days I don't want to get out of bed. I hope this tiredness passes soon because I too feel like I am letting my family down.

Re: Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
I'm almost five weeks as well. I had my surgery the day after yours. I still get very tired. In fact I spend most of my time in my recliner binging on Netflix. I get up to walk up and down my hallway for 15 to 30 mins every two hours. About 3 times a week, I venture out of the house for an hour or so, but I get so tired. I think it's normal and I'm trying to be patient with my body. Hang in there. We will be ourselves again soon!

Re: Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
Thank you everyone. I am so happy to have this board now and can use it better. It's nice to have insight and know that I am normal after all.
I did go to the doctor on Monday and he told me that it looks like I am healing well, but slower than other cases he had in the past. He said the pelvic pain is from my body getting adjusted while healing. So it will feel like period cramps, but if on a scale of 1-10 my pain is higher than a 6, then at the point that I need to call and come in. We discussed going on Prozac 20mg for now to help with my HRT and my post surgical blues. He said it will be 3 months before I am totally healed and I need to just be patient and also enjoy letting my family wait on me (Needless to say, he does not have 3 teenagers and 2 preteen girls in his home out of school for the summer). I go follow up on July 20 for follow up.
After the exam yesterday, I have had some extra pain, so I have been in bed all day just taking it easy. I do know after I am healed I am repainting my Master Bedroom. The green color that we keep putting off to paint has got to go!!

Close to 5 Week Point Hysterectomy Recovery and I am Unsure
Hi JDH☺️ you're r not alone, my surgery was June 10 and I have exactly the same symptoms that you were going through right now I'm so sorry you're having problems with your HRT hormone replacement. By any chance are you taking bio identical hormone therapy or are you taking synthetics because it really does make a big difference in how u r feeling right now. I would suggest seeing a qualified Doctor Who specializes in bio identical have your blood drawn see where your levels are and have the doctor prescribe something made just for you.hoping this helps you, don't hesitate to contact me
