Hysterectomy Yesterday! How can I lay down that will be comfortable for me?
I had my surgery yesterday and I got home today. I am in so much pain and I can't get comfortable at all. I've been taking the pain meds right on schedule but they aren't helping at all. My dr gave me Percocet, Valium, and Motrin. Is there any way I can lay down that will be comfortable for me?

Re: Surgery Yesterday!
Welcome to the recovery side.
Make sure you have your pain medicines on schedule (not sure some you take every 4 hours and some you take every 6 hours, check the prescription label)
If you don't have adequate pain releif make sure to check with your doctor to be sure you are healing correctly and sometimes a change in medicine is all you need since some women find one painkiller doesn't give them pain relief but a simple switch then they get pain relief.
Take great care and definitely if you can't get on top of the pain, call your doctor.

Re: Surgery Yesterday!
I was most comfortable on my side with a pillow at my back and one between my legs. I would switch sides throughout the night. A heating pad my also be helpful. I hope you get relief soon!

Re: Surgery Yesterday!
to you my dear. We are glad to see you on this side. Are you staggering the motrin inbetween the percocet? That will help keep the meds from wearing off at the same time and then you have to start all over in getting relief from the pain.
I used a pillow to prop my tummy up along with the one between my knees. Some have found that a body pillow is also helpful.
Remember we are here for you. Please let us know how you are.

Hysterectomy Yesterday! How can I lay down that will be comfortable for me?
Thank you ladies so much for all the advice.. I have a heating pad on my stomach and it is helping a lot. How long should I wait to call the dr if my pain meds aren't working well?

Re: Surgery Yesterday!
I had a lot of pain the first couple days. It turned out to be my back causing a lot of the pain in the abdomin . Once I applied heat to my back and laid on a lot of pillows the pain would go down. As stated above I was taking 2.5 mg of hydromorphone every 4 hours. In between it was tylonal. This prevented the delay of pain meds.
Not sure what type of surgery you had, but it is was a lapascopic, there could be gas trapped.

Re: Hysterectomy Yesterday! How can I lay down that will be comfortable for me?
Glad to hear you made it to the other side safe and sound. I wasn't true,y comfortable till I was able to sleep on my side at about a week and a half but until then I found the most comfortable lying on about four or five pillows to make a nest to support my back properly.
My pain was pretty bad the first night (I had a fentanyl PCA) but after that I was able to manage on mobic and panadol/Tylenol. I couldn't alternate the mobic because I normally take it twice a day for joint pain but with previous abdominal surgeries I found alternating ibuprofen and panadol/Tylenol every 3hrs works extremely well. I seem to feel better on the over the counter meds than on the heavier stuff which often doesn't agree with me.
With the Mobic I really felt it when it was getting closer to the time I normally take it. Alternating NSAIDS with other meds works so much better when recovering from surgery. Well in my experience anyway.
Overall though, I have felt a little better each day unless I overdo things. Hang in there, every day gets a little bit better.

Re: Hysterectomy Yesterday! How can I lay down that will be comfortable for me?
As the other sisters have posted -- pillows, pillows, and more pillows!! My dr prescribed Percocet and 550 mg naproxen. I counted the hours and took them to the minute. Stay on top of the pain. I laid in bed in what my DH called a nest. I had two pillows behind my head, one King size pillow under my knees, and two hospital pillows on either side of my abdomen, one kinda stuffed under my back to lift me where I wasn't lying exactly flat, but not all the way on my side either. Sometimes I had a smaller pillow laying on my stomach. The heating pad was too hot for me as I was still sweating out fluids from surgery, although I've been using it now since the 2nd week. Hang in there! It does get better.
