Re: 13 days post op...when should I go back to work?
Oh wow. I thought I had the last word. I have no idea what a robot surgery is, but I had a long incision cut right under my stomach. Surely my dr won't release me back to work and I tell him I'm not ready. Guess I'll just see what happens Thursday. Some days are better than others, but I know for sure I won't be ready to work 8 to 5 next Monday. No way! Lol

I'm taking 9 weeks off but everyone is different. I go back to work in a week and a half. It is important to listen to your body and see how you feel. Taking it is easy is sooooooo important!

Re: 13 days post op...when should I go back to work?
Hi pkitting I am 4 weeks and 3 days (almost same as you) post-op and the only kind of exercise I have done so far are my short walks along the driveway. All I can say is, returning to exercise after an abdominal hysterectomy (this is what I had) I will need to have clearance from my Dr. It is best to err on the side of caution. I understand that you are having some back pains, but you might want to check with your Dr first before doing some abdominal exercises.
Do you have a return date to work yet?

Oh, now I got it.... Bookwrm, please make certain to tell your how you are feeling/recovering, how you don't feel strong enough to return to work. They (Drs) usually will work with you especially if your health is at stake here. Wish you the best... let us know what he/she says on your follow-up.

Re: 13 days post op...when should I go back to work?
I am 3 weeks out and doing everything I used to do with the exception of lifting. But keep in mind that I had a TVH and a TAH takes longer to recover from. I grocery shop but make the kids carry it all in. I think it's good to find a fine line between resting, and moving around without wearing yourself out. When I'm tired I rest. When I feel good I go. I started driving at about 2 weeks. I was told as long as I felt I could respond properly and wasn't on any pain medication, it was fine. I use the automatic, not the stick shift. If you're just eating, sleeping, and watching TV you might not get your strength back because of the inactivity. Like I said, it's a fine line. Walking and getting the blood moving after surgery is important for recovery and prevents complications like blood clots, etc. As for going back to work, I'd take the full amount of time you have allotted. I too have a desk job but would get way too tired and sore after 8 hours, so I will be taking the full 6 weeks.

Re: 13 days post op...when should I go back to work?
I guess all this is so new to me and very confusing at times. I have my mother and mother in law telling me not to do anything but rest. Even my husband is keeping me indoors versus going for a short walk. They're acting like I'm so fragile. I went to pick up my nephew yesterday and my Mom acted like I was about to commit murder! Lol.
While my husband is at work I think I need to take advantage of that. Maybe a short walk won't hurt.
And from reading all the responses its best to take it easy and take my entire six weeks.
I'll be sure to tell my dr exactly how I feel and I will let you ladies know how it goes Thursday.

Re: 13 days post op...when should I go back to work?
Depending on your mother's age, she may be going on an old fashioned idea from the past, that total rest and inactivity is the way to recover from something. They used to keep women in the hospital for a long time after childbirth in the old days and they had to be on bed rest. After two weeks most people are not house bound and doing absolutely nothing, especially if they're beginning to feel good. The way now is to get people up and moving, even after major surgeries like heart bypass. They found that inactivity was bad and reasonable activity helped people recover faster and better. Maybe if you take your mother and/or your husband to the doctor with you and let the doctor give you activity instructions in front of them, they might let up on you a bit. I'd bet anything your doctor isn't going to instruct you to stay in the house and do nothing but rest after two weeks. He/she will probably say you should be increasing your activity level, walking every day several times (and outdoors couldn't possibly hurt you), and working up to normal activity over the next month of your medical leave. You rest when you are tired but if you feel good and aren't having any problems, being active is good for you. Of course you have to run all this by your doctor as I am not a doctor but I bet that in the absence of complications, increasing your activity isn't going to be forbidden. I know what it's like when old fashioned people try to impose their ideas on you. It's all good in meaning, but sometimes they're not quite up to date with the modern way of doing things. I went through this when I had my kids 15 to 20 yrs ago. I had my mother and MIL bewildered at my breastfeeding "how do you know how much she is getting", wanting me to sterilize bottles, feed on a schedule and not on demand, wrapping them up too warmly in the summer, feeding cereal at 4 wks of age, etc. I had to be firm that I wasn't doing things the way they did in 1960. Good luck with your appointment!
