Death Rates?

My mom called me last night so freaking out about my upcoming surgery. She said she read that 1 in 2000 women actually die during hysterectomies. Have any of you girls read any statistics like this? I thought it was something like 1 in 5000. Anyone come across data about death rates?

This subject was discussed in this thread. There are risks involved with any surgery, so try to focus on the positive.

Death Rates?

Hi Boop,

Like Catherine says any surgery has risks and your mum is just scared for you in many ways and this is possibly the easiest way for her to voice her fear.

Take care.................Karen

Death Rates?

I've put these fears aside because I have been fortunate to have found this site, with such a wealth of support and knowledge, that should any complications come up, I will be able to look for answers, and find the right questions to ask the doctors. I would place a bet on statistics, that most deaths are caused by not communicating with your doctor or seeking second opinions to things that arise. There are some that happen because it was unavoidable. The last post in "share your hyst story" is a great example of how things can go awry.
Take some time to thank your greater power for the wonderful things in your life, and strenght to get through the rest. It will surly set your mind at ease.
hugs and best wishes,
Donna

Good book to read

I read "The Woman's Guide to Hysterectomy" by Adelaide Haas and the stats in it were much lower than you said or on the thread that was mentioned. The risk was obviously higher for an abdominal, but not nearly as bad as you said. I checked it out of the library and it was a no nonsense book that I really obtained a lot of information from.

Death Rates?

I agree with CoffeeBrown. Yes, there is a risk but it is small. If you are in good health and have good doctors, you are way ahead of the game. Anesthesia has become safer in the past 10 yrs or so with the introduction of newer, better drugs. So don't let your mom's fears get into your head. It's not worth the anxiety.
