Is this normal after hysterectomy? ?

I had everything removed except for my right ovary on 7/31. Off and on all week I have had mood swings and I'm guessing hot flashes. I have crying spells and was wondering if this is normal. Also it feels like I have a tampon stuck. Maybe I'm just worrying to much.

Thanks,
Kellie

Re: Is this normal? ?

The "tampon stuck" feeling is very common post op. This is likely vaginal swelling from the surgery. You can try ibuprofen and an ice pack down below. For me this feeling stayed with me until about 6 weeks post op, and gradually got better.

Even though you've retained one ovary, it's possible it's not functioning properly right now. For many of us, our ovaries go into "shock" post op and it can take a while for them to kick in again. I didn't have the hot flashes, but I was extremely emotional and cried a LOT. I found my emotions leveled out at about the 6 week mark as well and that's when I figure my ovaries "woke up".

I would speak to your doctor about the menopause-type symptoms you're having. Some women take HRT for a short period of time until their ovaries wake up. There may also be natural remedies you can use to keep more comfortable.

Ovary Function Post Op

Sweetie, it does get better!

I did lose both ovaries but I've had moments of all of that. I just started HRT. I know the debate about HRT is different when you have an ovary so I hope you find what is right for you. Remember your body has been through a trauma. Your hormones are out of whack. Your body is sore and tired. Of course your emotional.
