Consent forms

Hello: Not sure I am posting this in the correct forum but hopefully someone can help.

I am scheduled for a TLH on March 20, 2014. I have had post menopausal bleeding for over a year now.

One of my concerns are the consent forms my doctor is having me sign. Some of the language reads as follows:

I am authorizing my doctor or "whomever he may designate as his assistant to perform upon myself the surgical procedure" namely TLH. Also that "I authorize health care providers other than the primary surgeon named above, including physician, fellows, residents, physician assistants, and/or registered nurse first assistants to perform significant surgical tasks during the procedure as authorized and supervised by the primary surgeon".

I am particularly worried that a student or less experienced doctor will be performing my surgery. I understand student doctors need to learn, but I am very anxious about this nonetheless.

Has anyone had to sign a consent form with similar language?

Thank you for any input.

Re: Consent forms

Definitely ask any questions you have of the Dr or the hospital staff if you're not comfortable signing. Get as much clarification as you need from them, including what, if any, options you have if you don't want a student dr participating in the procedure.

Re: Consent forms

No, I signed a consent for a large group of students to watch. My surgery made it into the medical journals and my surgeon is one of the best Davinci teachers in the country. It was an emergency and he knew it would be a major learning experience for these students. I gladly signed it figuring it was going to be done very carefully and methodically with all those students watching. Poor kids had to stand for over 6 hours!

My surgery was an emergency so I didn't have time to really read over it. It was read to me. I'm glad you have time to review it. I would certainly ask about specific parts that you do not like and even remove them if necessary. I did wright in a special clause into my consent.
