? About bowel prep

At your pre-op., do they give you your bowel prep tonic to take home or do you have to go and buy something for that at the drug store?

Your bowel prep is usually purchased at the pharmacy. Not all doctors order one for all patients, and the type can vary from patient to patient. Please make sure you use exactly what your doctor orders and follow the directions he gives you.

Different Drs. order different preps, if at all. I got mine in the grocery store drug aisle.

I was lucky, my Dr's office gave me the fleets and the douche. Oh wow,it's the least they could do!@LOL

My dr gave me a fleet to get from the pharmacy.
Use warm water in a bottle (or baby wipes, something soft) to clean yourself, that'll save you from getting raw.

my doc gave me an rx for "go litely" which should have been called "run quickly" and told me not to go shopping on the day I took it the rx said no refills and I told her she did not have to worry about that. It is called go litely because of the amt of electrolytes. But it does the trick. All I can suggest is that if you are prescribed this, ask for the pineapple flavor. I found out after the fact that it came in a flavor other than "salt water that tastes like it has dust in it"!

The bowel prep was a lot easier that I expected. I did a liquid diet all day and followed my dr.'s directions for a saline laxative (but couldn't get it all down--they called for 2 bottles--I would have thrown it up! Then the Fleet and clean as a whistle!

I think the liquid diet really helped with not getting overly raw.

I was in the hospital for 2 nights and didn't have a bowel movement until the day after I got home. The nurses kept asking and I told them there wasn't enough in me to go! So just as long as I passed gas, I was fine to go.

Thanks for the tip. hopefully i won't have to do one but if so it will be starbucks and milkshakes for me (my version of a liquid diet).

I just purchased my bottle of citrus magniusm. I start it on Tuesday around noon time. How quickly does this stuff start working? I need to pick up my son from school at 3:00...will I be okay?

And just to make sure that my imagination doesnt start to run wild....the bowel prep causes you to void all bowels movements, right? Does it cause you to vomit?

Delaney, the saline laxative was hard to drink. I put it on ice and drank it with a straw over about 30 minutes. I was supposed to drink 2 bottles (about 8 oz each) but I would have thrown up if I had to drink the second one. It is just to void BMs, not vomit. I thinkit started hitting about 2 hours later, and continued on for several hours.

I think having done the clear liquid diet all day (no dairy), I was in pretty good shape, but when it hit, I needed to run. The liquid helped with the "cleaning out".

You might consider having someone else pick him up, just in case. You don't want to wait much later to start, or you might be up all night.
