Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
Tomorrow is my prep day and then I'm in for surgery Friday morning at 5 am. When the nurse called today with instructions, I was nervous when she mentioned for me to come in so they could take blood (just in case!) Have any of you had to have blood during or after the surgery?
I also was half expecting to go home for the night. How many of you spent the night and are you glad you did?
Thanks!

Re: Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
They took blood for me today. One sample was for a white blood count to be sure there were no infections. Another was just blood gas for determining anesthesia, the third was for typing of blood. That was just an "in case" there was some need for a transfusion. That's not to say it will be necessary, but if it was then they would know exactly what type to get.
I know, I'm very anxious too. My best wishes for everything to go well for you.

Re: Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
Hello! I had the da Vinci and stayed in the hospital one nite and I am very glad I did. I sometimes can worry over every little symptom and was glad to have the hospital staff watching over me. They helped to get my pain under control, helped me to the bathroom for the first time and reassured me that all was normal and fine. The next day I was better able to cope with being home and more confident.Take care.

Re: Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
I am scheduled for May 13th and I had blood work done last Wed. My dr wanted me to go that early "in case anything was off he could take care of it in time" before my surgery date. But I have a history of anemia and chronic uti. The nurse said he was collecting rbc&wbc and something about blood gas also. Good luck and wishing you a speedy recovery!!

Re: Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
I had a DaVinci hysterectomy and was glad to spend the first night in hospital. I had a reaction to the pain meds -severe nausea- which they tried to get under control. They ended up finally giving me an injection of morphine so that I could get some rest. I would have been miserably uncomfortable at home. I did feel much better by morning and was discharged on schedule before noon. They were able to prescribe me something different for the pain. Good luck~*

Re: Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
I had the DaVinci in March. They put in a catheter, so you will more than likely have at least one night stay. Mine was done at a 22 bed surgical hospital, private rooms, so my fiance was able to stay with me. It was easy in and out for me, we were there a total of 25 hours. They usually let you go home if you can use the toilet within 6 hours of the catheter coming out. The worst part for me was the I.V. My hand was swollen the next morning from fluid build up.
Prayers and hugs to you!
Nancy

Re: Overnight hospital stay? Blood prep?
I had davinci three weeks ago. At my preop they drew blood for a pregnancy test, a complete blood panel and typing. They needed to make sure my iron was still at a safe level for surgery due to my severe anemia. I stayed overnight, my surgery started at 8am and I was in my room by 1pm. My pain was well controlled and the nurses were great! The catheter was in and out during surgery so I didn't have to deal with that at all. I enjoyed my stay at the hospital, I knew that while I was there I didn't have to worry about anything except resting, which is hard to do at home with two kiddos. Best of luck to you
