overweight facing surgery
Doing a search on "Plus Size" or "apron" should return some other comments about sisters who had their hysts while being over weight.
I never had any problems with any of my surgeries as a result of my weight. My doctor never even gave it a second though because by his assessment I am in excellent health and fit. He knew I did not smoke or drink caffeine, had no blood pressure issues, or underlying health issues, and I exercised 6 days a week.
I had a slight problem with about 1" of my incision at my waist ... (it was vertical) but kept it dry and all was well.

overweight
ok, here is my
I am very overweight also... the surgery was a little complicated by the weight- but recovery was the easiest I have ever been through. (2 prior c-sec's) (i was even back to work early - not recommended, tho) I was also worried about the weight, incision recovery, seeing a doctor etc.... but I couldn't ignore the symptoms anymore. Here I am at 11 weeks post op and I have NEVER felt better.
God Bless you as you face this surgery.

overweight facing surgery
Another "Goddess-sized" sister here...I was around 240-ish at the time of surgery, at 5ft tall (I often joke that my height and weight are around the same )
Honestly? I don't think my weight was a factor at all. Now...having said that, I didn't have any other risk factors that might have made anesthesia "iffy"....my BP has always been around 115/75, and I'm pretty healthy otherwise; I don't drink or smoke, and I wasn't on the Pill or anything. With regards to healing, I compared mine with other sisters here, and found my healing was no different to most folk - I had a remarkably smooth, uneventful recovery!
I had an inverted-T incision, which can be a little more difficult to heal, but I had no problems with either incision opening up or leaking. I took things VERY easily for the first 4 weeks, then gradually increased my mobility and activity to a more "normal" state.
Wishing you s and tons of luck for a safe surgery and smooth recovery,
Tess

thank you!
Hi fellow Hystersisters: thank you so much for your responses and words of encouragement. It is hard enough facing this surgery without worrying about added complications from this overweight body of mine. At this point I do not know which kind of surgery I will be having---I am hopeful it isn't abdominal----I need to talk with my DR in a couple of weeks. I will, as you suggested, let him know of my fears and ask questions. I knew one day that my weight would become a health issue. I have tried and tried to lose and keep it off--and will never give up trying. One friend told me yesterday that I am obsessing too much on the surgery and complications that could happen, and not enough about the future and how much better I will feel. She said if the quality of my life improves, I may be able to once again concentrate on weight loss and improved health. I am trying to take her advice--is hard for me though.
Thank you all so much for your responses. I know that I am not alone in this journey to the Castle. And neither are you--we are here for each other!!!! Take care and God bless all of you--Danzale 19

for deivaa
Hi Deivaa: Good luck with your doctor appt!! Please let me know if he/she had any suggestions or words of interest for we BBW's (Big Beautiful Women). My DH is trying to be so supportive--but only other Hystersisters know what we are going through. And to have particular issues out of the norm only makes us feel more alone. Thank goodness for this website--I say that constantly!!

overweight and facing surgery
I read your post an it was as if I had written it myself, my surgery has been schduled for April 7th.
I have had these same concerns running through my head.
I had been dieting for the last two months because I thought it would help after but got discouraged that my weight had not changed. My tumors seem to have a will and a mind of there own.
Part of me is soo panicked and the other can't wait.
I've been cut abdominaly before 9yrs ago for my appendix and I wasn't even close to the 252lbs that I am now.
While I a still terrified, it's comforting to know I am not alone in these feelings.

weight
you'll be fine, my surgery was great, ihad no weight related problems,5.9 320 pounds.
The incision did open up some, but no infection. I was up walking the halls on day two, and home that night. I was getting up without assistance by day 4, and have done more and more since.
you can do this, but do this: Buy yourself an abdominal binder from the medical supply store. wear it from the moment you can sit up and stand. It will keep you pushed together, and hpefully prevent bottom portion of incision from opening.

overweight facing surgery
Your story and weight could have been written by me. I too have some worries about my weight and surgery. Since November when I finally agreed that I needed to have a hysterectomy, I have been "thinking" about losing weight. But I have been "thinking" about it for years. I am going to see a dietician later this month, actually on the same day as my first pre-op appointment. So this will give me something else to talk to the doctor and dietician about. I hope they can schedule my surgery in June, preferably the 16th, first case in the morning. I sure don't want to be waiting all day. So I will have a few months to hopefully REALLY "think" about losing this weight. Thanks for all the peace of mind about many subjects after my awesome doctor gave me this web site to check out. And he is a man!

overweight facing surgery
I am a BBW also and an RN so i knew I could have some trouble healing. But whenI really think about it I think that things taht predisopose anyone to poor healing will get anyone no matter what size. I was very worried about having an incision (hirzontal that would be in the crease under my "apron" but it did very well. I did request that the nurse who took out my staples the first time (on 3rd day post op) used the half inch steri stirps and not cut them in half. She used something called tincture of benzoin that adds extra adhesiveness to the strips also. It healed just great. I too wondered abouta binder but did well and really made sure I used a pillow to splint my incision when I coughed. I kow at the castle were I work the doctors allhave standing orders for binders and ask for a universal one. It will save you the embaraasment of them getting you one that is too small.
I had to have a second surgery 6 weeks later and the gyn-onc went through almost the same incision but went up at the ends with a smile. How cute can that be. All I need is a vertical and I have an anchor on a stand. At least before it was all hidden in the crease, now it comes up and out. I really was surprised with the first one, was rather short for my size and she compained that I was so deep (duh). The second one gave him more room. But I was really worried about a second one 6 weeks later. I had one spot that kept draining serous until only just a few days ago but I had a really good look at it yesterday and it is healing very well again and all the steri stirps (and the dr used small ones this time)are off.
So us hevy gals can do just fine. I also found as a nurse that the BBW usually did qite well and really ounced right out of bed. It was the little ones with the tight muscles that hurt more and had more trouble with getting going on the ambulating.
