Worried about timing of vacation ...
I have surgery scheduled for May 20. I'm not as worried about surgery, as I am about how I'm going to feel at the time we leave for vacation -- June 21. I've heard varying reports of recovery times - anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months! I won't mind feeling tired (I can always nap), but I LOVE TO BOAT -- and we're going to Lake of the Ozarks for vacation. I don't want to hurt myself on a bumpy ride or anything. Will I be recovered enough to float in the water and ride in a boat? If not, I'm thinking of postponing my surgery. Need to decide TODAY and I'm driving myself nuts with this decision!!!

Same problem
I am having mine done on May 8th and have prepaid reservations for June 7th for vacation. My doctor said that he expects to be able to clear me, so that's consoling to me. I asked about biking and horseback riding, and he said it would really be up to me and what I felt I could do. Ask your doctor lots of questions and see what kind of direction s/he can give. Good luck!

I don't want to dampen your fun, but....
LovetoBoat,
What kind of surgery are you having? Will you have an abdominal incision (TAH) or are you having your hyst vaginally?
This is something that you should discuss with your DR.
I had a TAH 2 weeks ago and can't imagine boating in just two weeks. I was told at 4 wks is when my 100's of internal stitches will start to dissolve. You may have just as many internally, regardless of what kind of surgery you are having.
I have also been told the recovery time for a TAH is 6 to 8 wks.
Again, you may be having a different proceedure. Your doctor should be able to give you guidelines on what you will be able to do in such a short peroid of time.
Sorry to sound so bleak, but you only get one chance to recover. Be good to yourself!

Worried about timing of vacation
I was scheduled to have mine on May 12 then traveling 4 weeks later. I put my surgery off because I cann't change my trip DD graduation. I would eith change your surgery if youy can or your trip if I were you. Because you may not feel like doing anything or you may not get clearance from Dr. Mine is now June 30 week after I get back.

Worried about timing of vacation ...
At four weeks I was still feeling every bump in the road and sure wouldn't have been comfortable on a bumpy boat ride. No matter what you ask your you're not going to know how you will feel one month after your surgery until that time comes. I'd say you're taking a risk to make a commitment like this.

Worried about timing of vacation ...
When I finally decided to go ahead with surgery in early April I told my DR that we had plans to go on a 3 week RV vacation from TX to ND starting with the 4th of July. She told me I would probably want to wait until I got back. With a trip that long and having some peritinal repair that I would probably want to wait 8 to 10 weeks before I was going on a long truck ride. She referred to sitting a long time and getting "sweaty" as the biggest problem prior to 8 to 10 weeks. My earliest time was May 6th, exactly 8 weeks to the day before we plan on leaving. I am waiting to have surgery after we return.

One issue no one seems to mention in these responses is the scheduling around post-op appointments. Your doctor WILL want to see you after the surgery. Do make sure your post-op appointments aren't delayed because you're on vacation.
Personally, I like fun goals because it gives you inspiration to heal as well as you can. Additionally, having something to look forward to can alleviate or prevent post-op depression. Just make sure you're not over-extending, afraid to cancel at the last moment, going against DR's orders or doing something medically dangerous (like ignore a potential complication because you fear it'll mean you have to cancel.)
I'm also planning a trip during my recovery. I'm already set in my head that if I'm feeling wrong about the trip, I'll turn around and go home. Besides, you can make the argument that recovering on a houseboat will guarantee you don't get tempted to return to your normal routine too soon!

Worried about timing of vacation ...
I have surgery May 15, and planned on having dd in Colorado by June 16, but doc says it isn't going to happen! Oh, well. Vacations come and go, but my health is number one this year. Am not happy about it, but less happy about stupid "uterus harrassment". So my vacation will be spent in bed, reading. That is OK too.

Worried about timing of vacation ...
If you want to take a vacation that soon after your surgery, it would be best to plan something very quiet and relaxing!
Most of us are not Superwoman! There are some who think they are superwoman and do well. The majority of them, however, end up miserable for doing too much, too soon. Some even cause themselves serious problems due to their overdoing. Most of us need the 6-8 weeks of pampering---and beyond! if we can get it.
Most of us are not allowed to get in the tub or pool until at least 6 weeks post op because of the risk of infection. Lakes would be even more of a threat, I would think. My DR. said no strenuous activities until then, either.
Fatigue can be a real issue. Swelly Belly is common, too.
Even after 6-8 weeks you may not be ready for something that strenuous, even if you are very used to it now. You still may not feel up to being bounced around. I know I didn't. All those newly detached/re-attached ligaments were in no mood for that. Your insides may (will) be very tender. I suggest that you may want to proceed with caution. When you do try those activities post-op, only try a little bit and wait to see what effect it has on you.
