Large Fibriod-Trying to decide best course of actoin

MRI shows I have a 10cm x 15cm size fibroid. Equivalent of 5 months pregnant. Symtoms are making me feel miserable. I am to the point that I know I need to do something. I'm just not sure what to do. Meeting with Gyno to discuss in a week. Radiologist told me that Embolization procedure only expected to reduce 25% in size. Thus, I don't think this is best option for relief of symptoms. I'm wondering if others have experienced more reduction of size in their fibriods than 25% from the embolization procedure?
It seems like I am on the way to a partial hysterectomy. Having a hard time wrapping my head around this. 39 years old. Have not had children. Doesn't sound having a child is in the cards for me. Feeling a bit sad about this as well as having to have a part of me removed. But, trying to stay positive and also thankful to be alive in a time when something can be done to relieve these symptoms.

Large Fibriod-Trying to decide best course of actoin

Hi Hokielover,

Have you possibly discussed a myomectomy with your Dr. ?? It is a surgery that removes the fibroid only...and leaves the uterus.

My sister had a myomectomy when she was in her 30's...for a fibroid the size of a grapefruit. She had not had children yet. A couple of years later...she met my brother in law...and she went on to have my 2 nieces. The large fibroid did return later...and she had a hyst when my nieces were in their early teens.

I also might suggest you get a 2nd or even a 3rd gynecological opinion. I got 2 opinions myself...and it is one of the best things I ever did. Both Drs had different views on what type of surgery was best for me. I was prepared to get a 3rd opinion. Even had the appointment set up...and my 2nd Dr. worked out.

Also...you might look into lupron. I did 3 shots of lupron to shrink my fibroids enough for the type of hyst I was having. Lupron is not for everyone...and possibly worth looking into. Just an option.

So just my personal ideas. In the end...do what is best for you. That is what is most important. We Hyster Sisters are here to help if we can.

Best wishes,

Historylady

Re: Large Fibriod-Trying to decide best course of actoin

I also had fibroids removed in my mid-30s with a myomectomy and then had two complication-free pregnancies. I just found out that I've got them again, so since we are done having kids I'm wondering if hyst is the way to go this time around. So, don't give up on the kids yet!

Re: Large Fibriod-Trying to decide best course of actoin

Thank you very much for this advice. I have appt. to see my gyno but I had been thinking I should probably see another dr to get a second opinion. I have gotten the impression that my current gyno thinks that this fibriod is too large for the myectomy. I'm not sure yet which type of fibriod that it is (in the lining, etc). So that could play a role. Like you said, I do feel I want a 2nd or 3rd opinion before making a decision.

Re: Large Fibriod-Trying to decide best course of actoin

Hi, Hokielover,

I just wanted to pass along my support to you -- I'm your age, no kids, fibroid of a similar size. I'm hoping to get a myomectomy; I have a surgeon's appointment set up for late this month, then 2nd and 3rd opinions set up for August, just in case. I want to have a child, so the possibility of a hysterectomy has been...just blech! The forums here are filled with great information and everyone here is really supportive.

Lots of love and best wishes to you.

Re: Large Fibriod-Trying to decide best course of actoin

Please keep in mind that the level of care you receive is directly impacted by the talent, dedication and experience of your surgeon.
No women should lose her fertility because her surgeon isn't talented enough to do the required job. Or too lazy. It's much harder to perform a myomectomy than a hysterectomy.
A doctor isn't affected by either surgery but the loss of fertility can hurt forever to the woman.
Don't settle. Find the best surgeon you can to help you.
I had a myomectomy at age 47 to prevent potential damage to my body by a hysterectomy. My surgeon was very talented and caring.
They are out there.
