Will I feel like working from home?
I just found out this last Monday that I need to have a hysterectomy. I have known for years that it was likely but honestly felt like I had been going through peri-menopause, so I didn't expect the dr telling me it needed to be done soon - as a result of a recent sonogram which revealed 4 uterine fibroids (3-4 cm each) and a complicated/complex cyst with solid mass on my right ovary. She said "your uterus is ugly - we need to deal with the ovarian cyst ASAP and best to go ahead and deal with the uterus". Surgery is scheduled already for October 24th.
So, the biggest concern I have right now (and I know this sounds silly) is work. I am a very specialized insurance salesperson and I know that doesn't sound like something that shouldn't be something that couldn't be put on hold, but honestly, it can't. 1 of my assistants has been out all summer and is losing her battle with cancer and won't return (she will likely pass on before my surgery). I have been working lots of hours at this fairly new job to keep up with both of our jobs (and not doing that great at it). Anyway, missing work right now is really really bad timing. There is no one else in my office (and that is the honest truth - not bragging) that can do my job and I will lose clients and a lot of money if I don't do the work. So, all that to say, luckily I do have the ability to work from my laptop at home. My boss has been very understanding and we will have to figure out all the ways to avoid actually going on short-term disability so they won't shut my computer off. My question is, do you think I will have the presence of mind at least by the 2nd week to be able to work from my bed or couch? I am not afraid of the pain - I have had 4 shoulder surgeries & 3 kidney stone surgeries including bi-lateral ureter stents for 4 weeks and worked through most of this with very little time out. I just need some reassurance that this is going to be possible - even if with small naps in between. And I am hoping/planning to at least go back part-time after 3 weeks. Am I crazy? Is this possible? I know I should be more concerned about my health, but right now, work is my worry.
Any assurance is really appreciated. (No lectures please. I know this might seem silly but it is really my biggest concern right now and I don't feel like I have a lot of choices.)
Thank you!!

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
I've been working on a fairly big translation project and i can honestly say i still can't concentrate much 12 days post-op. All i manage is a few sentences at a time and I'm mentally exhausted.
I think it depends on how demanding the job is, and you can't blame yourself for trying. Sounds like it was already hectic pre-op. Do what you can when you can and listen to your body. Health comes first.

I work from home and the first 3-4 weeks I had a hard time concentrating. It was also difficult sitting at my desk. Every one is different depending on how your surgery goes and how your recovery is. Best wishes to you.

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
Depends on procedure, recovery and how demanding job is, personal support etc. I had a a not so typical text book hysterectomy, I started working from home day age released from hospital post op day 5, wasnt easy, and paid for it. Longer recovery. Post op week 6 still working from home, full medical restrictions. Everyone is different, could work for you if flexible. Good luck!

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
Change a few details and I could have written this. I am also extremely concerned about my time off of work because I too have a mon-fungible position.
I plan on being completely out and unavailable for the first week and then working remotely as I am up to it. However my surgery is 11/06 and I have an external audit 12/05-06 and I have to be there. That will mean a couple of 12 hour days and I expect it will send me back to bed, although I hope I'm pleasantly surprised and I'll be back to myself.
It's a lot of pressure when there isn't someone who can temporarily assume your duties. My job is very important to me, but so is getting better and I need to do this. If I got hit by a bus today they would be without me and they'd be inconvenience (and I hope sad..ha) but the company wouldn't shut it's doors. They'd find a way to manage and that's what they'll have to do when I'm out, we're humans, not robots, and sometimes life happens.
For me I'm leaving as much documentation as humanly possible for the minor stuff, I have a network engineer on call for the major technical stuff and other things will have to get done as it becomes possible.
But I too have an overly ambitious plan for returning and I'm hoping that doesn't blow up in my face.

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
I was working from home *a bit* my second week. However, I certainly wasn't doing so full time and couldn't have if I tried. Maybe you can just take care of the immediately critical stuff and put the rest on hold until at least the third week?
Based on my own experiences, I'd say that your proposed schedule is about a week ahead of itself. I'd suggest that it might be more realistic to plan on dealing with immediately critical stuff *only* from home the second week, working longer periods from home the third week and returning to the office *part-time* the fourth week.

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
I had an LAVH done and had extreme difficulty being in a sitting position. The first week I was in a lying down position and in the second week I could sit in a recliner if I totally reclined back both not good positions for typing or trying to read a laptop screen. I am at three weeks post op now and sit up for short periods of time only otherwise I get pressure.
I am sure working from home is doable if you have to but expect it may be a challenged and lengthen your recovery. Good luck with your surgery.

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
As others have said, it really depends on your recovery. The mental fog may be the limiting factor. That can be partly due to narcotics but sometimes the lack of focus lingers. Physically I surely could have worked at 2 wks but other ladies have discomfort sitting. If you must work, working from home would surely be best. And I totally understand needing to work. Rest and don't overdo from the start, to put yourself in a good place to start your work. But do a reality check with someone you trust re: are you mentally sharp/clear enough to do your work. Sometimes it takes a few more days to get back to usual. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Re: Will I feel like working from home?
For me - I'm self employed/contract work. I manage 2 RE offices, and brokers wanted to be paid on time, working with numbers after surgery is not a good idea because of the lingering effects of the "foggy brain". I duplicated all my files and set up my office at home as I would have at the main office. I also wrote notes that worked like magic as far as numbers -- didn't want to pay out $110,000 commission if it was only supposed to be $10,000.00 LOL best to prepare as much as possible beforehand. Prepare for the worse case scenario just in case, hopefully not having to go there ;o) Best of luck to you!
