"Flashing" after Hysterectomy?

I have had Hot Flashes for at least one year now and my periods are few and far between. My Hysterectomy is scheduled for January 12, 2006. I will have my ovaries removed. After my surgery can the "flashing" continue? If so, how long does this continue and WHY !!!!!!! I am not going to use HRT. I would like to know more about Hot Flashes . What causes it and what can be done to reduce the intensity of it naturally. And most importantlly, WHEN WILL IT END !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for any insight,
Pam

"Flashing" after Hysterectomy?

Hi, I had a tah/bso 3 years ago. I had been menopausal for about 3 years. My dr started me on hrt the day after my surgery and I still had some pretty bad menopausal symptoms until we got the dosage tweaked to the correct amount. I had horrible headaches, really bad hot flashes, night sweats, the whole nine yards... My dr explained that even after menopause, our ovaries continue to function but at a reduced level. I'm still on hrt but at a lover dosage now.

I think that you should discuss this with your dr and together decide what would be best for you to do to get through it most comfortably.
There is a No-Hormone Desert Oasis forum here that might be helpful also:

Best wishes.

"Flashing" after Hysterectomy?

I was like you - had been experiencing hot flashes and very irregular periods. Following the hysterectomy (tah/bso) the flashes changed - no more major sweating; it became more like a power surge - intense internal heat (and over in a few minutes). Dress in layers!

I also do not use HRT. I take Evening Primrose Oil plus a multivitamin, and so far things are going well.
During weeks 2/3, I became very emotional, and thought I'd need the HRT to cope, but after those 2 weeks, everything settled back in and I think this will work out ok.
Give yourself time to adjust. I'll keep you in my prayers.

"Flashing" after Hysterectomy?

Hot flashes are caused by the drop and fluctuation of the estrogen in your body. My dr said that it affects the part of your brain that controls your body temp. Your brain tells your body it is to hot, so it releases heat. I never had a flash until after I had my hyster, as soon as I did I knew that HRT was for me. Not everyone needs HRT, and their are many alternatives Good Luck to you with your surgery and your recovery 's
