post op bad dreams
Hi!
Having bad dreams is perfectly normal. When you've had them for a couple of nights, you start to dread going to sleep. Instead, put your mind in a happier place, like the your totally relaxed vacation spot or just imagine lying in the sun, being warm and contented.
I believe what is happening is the medication is working it's way out of your system. Your body and mind are not used to it being there so it kind of messes with you.
This is a good thing to mention to your surgeon when you go to your first post-op appointment. Ask, for your own peace of mind, if he/she has heard of this before. Chances are it's perfectly normal and it will pass.
Write down all of your questions and concerns for your first post-op appointment. Sometimes when we get in there, we're so nervous about the check-up we forget what we wanted to ask or talk about!
Try really hard not to stress about these things. Your body is healing and it will take time. Before you know it, the time will rush past and all will be better than normal again!

post op bad dreams
I had some very vivid dreams after my surgery. I was told it was due to the pain meds I was taking. As soon as I stopped the medication the wild dreams went away. So, if it helps any the dreams are probably just temporary.

this too shall pass
I had some very bad dreams for about 2 weeks after surgery. Even when I had been off the pain meds for a week. Try white noise, like a fan or a humidifier when you sleep, I have 2 men that live next door, their bedroom is right next to mine and I can't get any sleep unless I go sleep in my DD room. We finally put a fan in our bedroom, on our dresser & pointed it upwards, at first it messed with my sinuses (sleeping w/a fan in Winter is pretty sad, but it helps) but I slept SO GOOD! I don't even wake up in the middle of the night anymore. I also drink Himalayan Goji Juice. This has so helped w/my anemia, and night sweats, and lack of energy.

post op bad dreams
I had horrible dark dreams after surgery. I can't explain it, they weren't really nightmares, ... just very dark. I hated it. Luckily it only lasted a few days.

I had horrible nightmares too. It only happens when I take my pain pills. I haven't taken any lately and haven't had any dreams. If I have to take one I take it during the day not a night, I am actually afraid to.

post op bad dreams
I had some very vivid bad dreams for a couple of weeks afterward. This past Sunday I ended up taking a pain pill due to over-doing. It's really funny...I dreamt that somebody had actually sprayed hairspray in my mouth. When I woke up yesterday morning, I still had the taste in my mouth. Dh called to check on me and told me that I had a nervous cough the whole night. He had made me drink almost a full bottle of water until he made me take a hit off of his asthma puffer. I hadn't woken up enough during all of this to even remember drinking the water...much less taking the puffer (which I had never used before). The funny thing is that I remembered that part of the dream, waking up with the taste, then he told me pretty much why. It still took me a good 4 or 5 hours before it actually dawned on me that the puffer is why I thought somebody had sprayed hairspray in my mouth. I had taken another pill yesterday morning because of the pain caused by all the coughing...then after the realization I didn't take anymore. I stuck by my trusty Xanax to keep the nervous cough at bay, and finally got a good nights sleep last night.
I agree with the others when they say that they're only temporary. And the best thing that I can tell you is to find something (or someplace) that relaxes you, get a good mental picture, and refer to it if you wake up because of one of these dreams.
Hugs, Prayers, and Luck,
Char
