2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

My gyn prescribed 2% Testosterone cream for me yesterday. I was told to use it daily - apply to vulva/cliboris area for dryness and low sexual arousal. But he didn't say how much and no instructions came with it.

I just sort of dabbed my finger in it and got a very small amount this morning to apply but not a very accurage way to keep track. Is this an okay way to do it or do I need to really measure and if so how?

I have been using the Estring for 6 weeks now and that has helped internally but not externally. It seemed to the first week or so but after that I was back to external dryness. Doc told me to use Vagifem twice weekly to help boost estrogen too. I am wondering about removing the Estring and just using two Vagifem every three days. I do feel the Estring and it sometimes irritates when I exercise.

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

Did you have your testosterone levels tested to see if your levels were low? Just asking, because it's a good idea to have that checked before supplementing with that hormone. That said, when I was first prescribed testosterone I used .25ml daily, which is literally just a dab. Reminded me of an old commercial. Did your cream come with a measuring instrument? If not, it should have. I had a little syringe that I inserted into the cream.

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

Thanks for your reply.

1. No testing. My dr doesn't think hormone testing is really necessary I guess. I actually asked a few months ago when I first started noticing the dryness and I was told "You have no ovaries, you have no hormones." I couldn't believe he said that.

2. No type of measuring tool came with it at all.

Doc just said use a little bit once a day on vulva area to help with irritation, soreness and arousal.

I have a sister-in-law that is a lab tech - I wonder if she might be able to get me something to measure with?

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

Wow - is your dose high? My prescription is for 1/4 tsp of 0.1% cream daily on thigh area. That's WAY lower percent than yours! I have noticed no improvement with libido and it's been almost 3 months now.

Call your doctor or pharmacist--you need some guidelines!
My doctor told me never to apply the cream directly to my genitals--she wants me to apply it to the area right about my pubic hairline.

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

I thought 2% was the typical Testosterone Cream.

My doc doesn't like prescribing from a compounding pharmacy so this is what the traditional prescription is to the best of my knowledge.

Well - the doctor told me to apply is to the vulva area for the dryness and irritation. I guess those are my guidelines - I don't know that he would tell me any different than what he did in person at my appointment.

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

2% is on the higher end of average doses prescribed for women. Typically no measurement device is provided. When I was using it, I was just using a tiny blob about the size of a pea at most. It is very common (and a great idea) to apply it to the vulva, as long as there is no alcohol or other harsh chemical in the base. It absorbs best through thin skin, and the skin in that area is very thin.

If you are not using any systemic estrogen - and it sounds like you are not - then it is quite likely that much of the testosterone you use will be converted to estrogen as your body tries to reach its natural hormone balance. So, it may take some time to build up enough actual testosterone to see improvement in libido. Don't be tempted to increase the dose to hurry it up... it can result in too much testosterone, which is not a good thing.

My DR feels that testosterone replacement should not be prescribed unless (1) serum levels of free and total testosterone have been checked to make sure low testosterone is actually the problem; (2) liver function tests have come back normal, as testosterone replacement stresses the liver; and (3) lipid profile comes back normal (cholesterol), as women with cholesterol problems should not use testosterone. It would concern me if my DR did not monitor these things while I was on testosterone.

Does your DR know you are using both Estring and Vagifem together? That seems like "belt and suspenders" - redundant, not to mention expensive!

-Linda

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

When I was first prescribed testosterone I was prescribed the 2% cream. I used that for quite some time, but eventually started with some symptoms of coarser hair on my legs and thighs and chin. I quit using it, than my T levels dropped so I talked with my doctor about the 1% cream and that is what I have been using ever since with no more problems.

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

I just love you ladies. I am getting more info from you than my doc.

I did just have a yearly physical with my family dr and my liver function test came back normal my total cholesterol is 207 a bit high (LDL 110; HDL 59; Trigs 38).

It was my ob/gyn that prescribed both the Vagifemm and Estring. I told him that it seemed my external irritation was better the first week or so I was on Estring and he thought maybe it was because of that initial surge and adding the Vagifem 2x weekly might keep the level up better.

I used the testosterone cream yesterday morning and last night seemed as if clitoris was less sore. I used some today and tonight I am more sore. And looking with a hand mirror I appear sort of "puffy" around labia majora. I don't think I will apply any tomorrow morning. Maybe I used too much. - Should I apply some estrogen cream to try to conteract it?

I am so frustrated. I just want to cry. The first few months after surgery everything was great - felt like my old self and now for the past 6 months I have not been able to get "comfortable" down there every since having an infection.

I don't know. Not much for choices of dr's in my area. I am feeling frustrated. I am tired of having external discomfort that interferes with my exercising and sex life. The first few times after my surgery sex was wonderful - practically had orgasm before my dh even touched me. Now it just doesn't seem to happen. I have plenty of interest and want sex. I just don't get aroused and respond.

This stinks.

Re: 2% Testosterone Cream - How much to use

I have the same issues. Void of feeling in that region. In fact more stimulation just makes me annoyed... I want it to work so badly. It only worked well right after switching to Femring from the patches - for the first week or so. Then back to nothingness. Talked to my drs office this past week and they said they can prescribe Viagra in extreme cases (only a couple of times), but would be willing to up my test cream dosage from the 0.1%... . But they did tell me with some women, the test dose NOT restore libido. With many it does, but I'm not one of them.

Let us know if you find something that works. Feeling quite desperate here too.
