1 week post hysterectomy: Cramping and pain
Has anyone experienced severe back pain and feelings similar to menstrual cramping that radiate through pelvis and down thighs? I am a week post op and my dr was surprised that I was having so much pain. I wonder if the back pain can be related to my bowels. Completely abnormal bowels since the surgery. Thanks

Re: Cramping and pain
If you had a robotic or vaginal hysterectomy, lower back pain is common due to the position we were in. The night of surgery it hurt so bad not even the pain meds touched it. About week 4 I went to my chiropractor for an adjustment which really helped.
As for the cramping it very well could be bowel related. I had to really watch what I ate for about 3 months. If I ate the wrong foods gas was horrible and didn't like to pass. I was told the first 3 months to not worry about needing help to go or deal with the gas. If you aren't get some Gas X to help with it or if you have used other methods in the past for gas, use it.
It can take many of us some time to get those bowels moving. I had problems pre-surgery and two years out still have not found the 'recipe' that would work like I did pre-surgery. For me it is not constipation but bowels not wanting to move due to the effects of anesthesia. This long out I am in the minority, so don't be concerned it will happen to you. But right now you need to be taking the stool softeners, plenty of liquids, walking often (even short walks are good); watch the food you eat for foods that trigger gas problems, fiber (fiber makes it worse for me), etc.

1 week post hysterectomy: Cramping and pain
I can vouch for back pain - in the middle back, and I've got a strong back from lifting free weights pre-surgery. I've read that our backs are compensating for our surgery-weakened abdominals. I notice most often when I've done too much, my belly swells and back hurts. Reclining and a heating pad helps.
Menstrual-like cramps, I've felt a little but sometimes I can't tell if it's gas. I've made it past the constipation, but I still have churning bowels. Fiber cereal, water, fruits, veggies, dried prunes & prune juice along with moving a bit helped, but other times it feels like rocks are moving through!
