Knock Out
I've been reading, and again I know every case is different. But I was wondering -- does every woman having a hyst (regardless of what procedure) also have to have a spinal? I am so deathly afraid of them. I had one, ONCE, in my first pregnancy and it almost ended badly. I'm having a LAVH and I think my doctor said I'd just have general anesthestia. I can never spell that, sorry.

Knock Out
Hi Beci!
I only had general anesthesia for my TAH/BSO and everything went just fine. Afterwards, I had Dilaudid administered through a PCA (patient-controlled) IV and that worked well for pain control.
When you meet with the anesthesiologist before your surgery, he/she will explained what is planned and give you the opportunity to ask questions. Be sure to speak up about any past negative reaction to any type of medication. They will probably ask you about this numerous times, anyway!
Many s and Best Wishes,

No, not every sister has a spinal. Many sisters have general anesthesia. Some of them also have epidurals. I think each group of Anestheseologist (sp?) does things different ways. A lot of them look at your unique situation to make that determination.
Good luck with your surgery and may you have a speedly recovery.

I, too, am afraid of spinals. I had a general. The anestheologist spent a lot of time talking with me before my surgery so I had a lot of opportuity to discuss things with him.
Best wishes for your surgery.

No spinal for me - only general anaesthesia. Good luck with your surgery.

I know this is my thread, lol, but I remembered something. With any luck I'll have the same anestheologist. He's such a guy! He's awesome! You know how sometimes when the nurse goes to insert your IV and usually they start at the hand then work their way up, hoping to find a good vein? Well, for my D&C it was horrid. I was SO anemic then. He tried my hand, my outer wrist and my inner wrist in TWO places before I said to please try the crook of my arm. I'm always good for giving there, ha. And the nurse, who was also a guy, was really, really feeling bad for hurting me so many times. He went to get someone who was more skilled in other areas, like crooks of arms. They both consulted with the anestheologists choices, and he didn't care if IVs are in arm crooks. Yay! Got it there -- new nurse put it in on one try and my DH goes "OIL!" lol -- he's such a smartarse. ; ) And for my EA it was the same place (Day Surgery), same everyone. Same crook of my arm. Yay! So I'm hoping everything is the same, again, for my hyst. I'm thinking... do docs usually strictly work with specific anestheologists? If so, I'm in luck! Again, he's awesome -- a big fat fatty like me, and he makes me feel right at home. Gives me a big wave when he sees me being rolled in.
Ohhhhhh.. I rarely mention this, ladies. I apologize. I'm deaf. Not since birth, so I have knowledge of the English language and I talk just fine. I know a little tiny bit of sign language. My children say I love the 'finger' best. Take after their dad, don't they? LOL I'm only mentioning that I'm deaf because the anestheologist knows that and all the 'staff' who work with my doctor are SO great. They know I'm deaf and adjust accordingly. They also know I'm going to be rolled into surgery after getting a 'mickey' (relaxer, lol) and am going to tell them all I love them and thank them ahead of time for taking such good care of me.
So... moral: I don't think I'll be getting a spinal. I did talk to my doc about how I fare when put under, and he said I do really well. But of course, we're put under deeper for invasive surgery. But I've already been there, done that with my gall bladder removal. So it's all good!

LOL -- we love 'good' knockouts! They generally can do things these days to avoid any post-op nausea. I get this small patch behind one of my ears, drink some nasty tasting conoction, and I believe the anestheologist does some tinkerin' and also adds something while we 'sleep' to further squelch any desire to vomit when we wake up.
