Insomnia?

TAH was Tuesdday morning. I slept on and off all day Tuesday, but never more than a couple hours at a time. Tuesday night was the same, couple hours of sleep followed by a couple awake.
Now I'm at a point where I cant fall asleep at a reasonable time, it's 1:00 am nowand I'm not remotely tired. When I do finally fall asleep it's only for a couple hours then I'm up again. It wouldnt be so bad if I took multiple naps during the day, but I'm usually only falling asleep once in the afternoon for an hour or so.
It doesnt help that as soon as I get sleepy I also start to get sweaty and it makes me really incomfortable.
Anyone else? Any hints?

Re: Insomnia?

Hi (((PomTini)))

You are certainly not alone in experiencing this. I remember that immediately post op. Hopefully it will get better with time. I have read various posts by women trying to find a solution to this. Some women have luck with Melatonin supplements, some with a snack before bed. I have read that warm milk truly can help with sleep as well. Hope you find an answer soon!

Re: Insomnia?

I am having similar problems at 6 weeks post surgery (today
I consider a good night one where I don't actually have to get out of bed during the night even if I'm awake for most of the time. I've tried sleepytime tea, advil and tylenol pm, wine and they will all get me to sleep but will not keep me asleep. A year ago I'd tried melatonin and that just gave me RLS symptoms which PM medicines can also give me. I started HRT about a week ago because like you, it seems the moment I get sleepy suddenly I'm all sweaty and daytime hot flashes became unbearable, but so far it's only slightly working. Hopeful that eventually it will kick in a bit better. I'm hoping to solve this problem before I start back teaching Sept. 1!!

Re: Insomnia?

I had post op insomnia too. In fact, it has worsened. I am now 8 weeks post op (today!) and I get up 2-4 times a night. I just read or listen to my iPod because I don't like to take meds to make me sleep.

Re: Insomnia?

I tried Advil PM last night and slept 6 hours. I did get up once to pee, but was able to go right back to sleep. Just wish I could get comfortable enough in my bed, the chair is getting old.

Have you tried LOTS of pillows?? I have two under my head/shoulders, a long body pillow under my legs to elevate them and take strain off my belly, and if on my side, its between my legs with yet another pillow tucked under my belly. Its a lot to fanagle(sp?) But comfy and works wonders!!

Re: Insomnia?

I have trouble getting to sleep, too. I read til my eyes blur (12:30-1am)! I know warm milk works, but I'm trying to cut down on liquids before bed so I can STAY in bed! LOL! Bananas help, too! (Also helps if you get night leg cramps - potassium helps!) Try a generic of Benadryl - my pharmacist said it's the same drug they put in sleep aids without the price or adding the pain meds in Tylenol/Advil PM that you might not need! Of course check with your Dr before trying any meds, but it could help you get a good night's sleep!!

Good luck! I'm going to try Benadryl tonight myself! Been getting allergy symptoms lately anyway! LOL!

Re: Insomnia?

Someone suggested on another threat yesterday to take a large calcium magnesium pill before bed to help with sleep. I took one last night--along with my usual Sleepytime tea with honey and I actually had a pretty good night's sleep--not perfect but about the best I've had recently. Now I've been on HRT for about a week and possibly that is finally kicking in and is responsible. But I plan on doing the same thing tonight to see if it has the same effect. It's worth a try!!

Re: Insomnia?

I had been taking one benadryl (25mg) at night and was sleeping really well. Last night I tried taking 1/2 of a benadryl and I was awake 3 different times during the night. My husband swears that melatonin works for him, so I'm going to give it a try tonight.

I just wanted to mention that benadryl is the ingredient in Tylenol/Advil PM that causes the sleepiness. If you don't want to take anything extra, you can buy the generic version of benadryl alone at any drugstore.
