Hysterectomy With Ovaries Intact
Hi
I need some information about what will be or could be the side effects of hysterectomy if i have this surgery done and my ovaries are kept.
Also I am wondering if irregular periods, bloating , feelings of acidic stomach and feelings ofbeing sick to stomach can this be related to fibroid and it putting pressure on other organs
THANKS
Annie

Hi!
I had an LSH for fibroids. I do remember an acidy feeling stomach, although I used to drink a lot of Diet Coke and coffee while at work. I got some relief by having a small snack.
Fibroids are notorious for causing all kinds of problems--backache, bloating, pressure on other organs such as bowels and bladder, anemia due to heavy bleeding, etc etc etc. You will probably get better answers and suggested link sites if you post on the pre-op or hyst alternative boards.
As far as keeping ovaries, that is a decision that only you can make along with guidance from your doc. Many ladies do choose to keep their ovaries and/or cervix. I have read that the ovaries can shut down, sometimes temporarily sometimes permanently, due to shock from the surgery. I kept mine and they seem to be ticking along just fine.
Much luck to you!

Hysterectomy With Ovaries Intact
LSH is laparascopic supracervical (subtotal) hyst. Hope I spelled that right. Basically the doc goes in via 3 small incisions in the abdomen. The uterine tissue is cut into small pieces using a tool called a morcellator, and then the tissue is removed through one of those incisions. It's less invasive than an abdominal hyst. It's not always an option as it takes a surgeon who is highly skilled in lap surgeries. I think this type of surgery is gaining popularity--check with your doc to see if there is an experienced surgeon in your area. Supracervical or subtotal means that only the top portion of the uterus is taken out and the cervix is left, which is really just the bottom part of the uterus.
I don't know how to move your post--I think only the hostesses are allowed to do that. You could try clicking on one of their names at the home page of the message board. Or you could just re-type it if you'd rather.
Keep reading and researching! This is a great place for information and support.

Hysterectomy With Ovaries Intact
I had my LAVH in February and kept both ovries. My ovaries have continued to work just fine since surgery - no hormone changes. I can still tell when I am ovulating each month because I will feel a slight "twinge" on one side or the other - nothing serious. I also still have some mild PMS symptoms each month (breast swelling and tenderness, slight headache, and mild moodiness). However, the symptoms are milder than prior to my surgery and I no longer have the excessive bleeding and backaches. I was glad I was able to keep my ovaries - I am 42 years old and may have several years until I enter menopause and would like to avoid HRT until I have to. Fortunately my ovaries were still healthy and could be kept.
The decision to keep ovaries or not is a personal choice that you and your doctor need to make. It can depend on your age, family history, and condition of the ovaries.
Since I had my uterus removed (it was loaded with fibroids) I have not had any backaches, bloating, constipation, or stomach difficulties.
Keep us posted on how you are doing. Take care.

Hysterectomy With Ovaries Intact
Hi Annie
You've gotten some great advice from the ladies above.
In terms of moving posts to other forums ... we ask that you post your message in one forum only. I think this forum (Options and Alternatives) is a great place for your topic and questions. If you decide to have a hyst and have more specific questions about surgery and preparation for surgery, I'd suggest that you post on the Pre Op forum.
Keep reading and asking questions. We'll provide support, any way we can.
Beth
