Did Anyone Else Have a Liquid Diet the Entire DAY before surgery, plus bowel prep?

Hi, post-op ladies.

I go in on 11/10 for a LSH. I just re-read my pre-op instructions. I am to have a liquid diet (jello, broth, Gatorade) the entire DAY before my surgery, then nothing by mouth after midnight. My surgery is at 10:30 a.m. I think I'll be famished! I am really worried because I get faint when I'm hungry!

Also, I have to drink that awful calcium citrate at 9am the day before the surgery. Then at night, I do the Fleet enema. What a complete nightmare! Seems like overkill to me. Did anyone else have to go through this pre-op torture?

Yes, my instructions were exactly the same. Nothing but clear fluids the day before, bowel prep in the afternoon and then the enema that night.

Hi Cindy,

I had surgery on a Wednesday. My Dr. had me begin a soft food diet on Sunday and continue soft foods until my liquid diet and bowel prep on Tuesday.

I didn't have to do an enema - but I had to drink phospho-soda at 4p.m. and again at 8p.m.

Good Luck .

Michelle

I did not have those instructions. And I don't know if they did something before surgery because they knocked me out in pre-op. However due to my nerves the 2 days prior to surgery there was nothing in there anyway!

I do remember reading though that it is good to be cleaned out prior to surgery. Just remember to have stool softner, fiber, and plenty of water after the surgery. It will take a little while to get food running through the pipes again.

Hoping the best for you!

Hugs

Exactly, had to do it because I was having bowel problems. If they found anything wrong they could take care of it without the fear of infection.

Everything was OK but, better to be safe than sorry.

Wow, looks like there are lots of us! Thanks for your responses!

How did you all deal with the hunger? Or were you so nervous you didn't really feel it? Just yet another thing to worrry about!

bowel prep

Hi

I have just been for my Pre-op and was told the reason why I was being admitted to hospital two days before surgery was for a bowel prep. They told me it was because I have endrometrosis and they may have to move my bowel to get it all out (i think that is what she said) If they move the bowel it will seize up and cause a blockage. They told me I could have a normal tea at 5.00 and then nothing but clear liquids till the op. Sound absolutely wonderful doesn't it .....................NOT.

Since my surgery isn't till 3:30 pm I can have a light breakfast the day before...wooopie. Then I go to liquids and the yucky drink to clean everything out. My worry is how I am going to go ALL DAY LONG before the afternoon surgery without so much as a sip of water. It will be a LOOOONNNNGGGG DAY!

There ARE a lot of us.....I have clear liquids all day tomorrow, and then the phospho-soda prep at 3:00 and 6:00. It's the hardest part, I think....my mother-in-law is having a cornea transplant tomorrow, so I'm just going to have to carry my clear liquids with me to the hospital with her for while I wait. I"m hoping I get home in time to start the bowel prep at the time given to me, but it looks like later wouldn't be altogether bad, if I don't. My surgery isn't until 1:00 on Friday

Grace & peace,

Terry
